BBC Radio 1: The Story In Photos Of The Beeb’s Youth Broadcast 1967-2000

BBC Radio 1 1 was established in 1967 as a successor to the BBC Light Programme. Radio 1 would give the cool kids what they wanted. The likes of Radio Caroline had been made illegal by Act of Parliament. That might have made it cooler. But if the kids wanted State-run pop, Radio One was the only one for them.

On 30 September 1967, Tony Black burn set the airwaves alight.

A London policeman who asked questions and made notes after talking to bus driver Fred Blundell and his fare Anita Harris. The bus parked outside the Hilton Hotel was taking Anita to the BBC studio to sing her new single on Radio 1, called ‘Tuppenny Bus Ride’.

Paul McCartney surprising Radio 1 DJ Steve Wright and his production assistant Dianne Oxberry by dropping in for a chat after they broadcast an on-air appeal to meet him. Diane mentioned McCartney's name during a talk about the stars people would love to meet, and as he was working down the road on his new album, McCartney strolled into the studio and played live for Diane.
