Lily Allen: Not Keen On Feminists

FEMINISTS are really, if we’re being honest here, only truly great at one thing – and that’s picking holes in people’s arguments. That would be the arguments of the patriarchy, sexists and bigots and, most importantly, the arguments of other feminists.

Throwing a match on the kindling is Lily Allen, who thinks feminism shouldn’t even be a thing in 2014, stating that “everyone is equal” in the modern world.

Good news for all those children who have been victims of FGM, the women who are denied rights by backward governments and the rest.

Allen commented on the state of feminism is 2014 as part of her role as guest editor of Shortlist’s ‘How To Be A Man’ issue. See? Women can be editors of magazines about men! All is well in the world, clearly.

Pertinently though, Allen states that women are their own “worst enemy.”

“Feminism. I hate that word because it shouldn’t even be a thing anymore,” she said. “We’re all equal, everyone is equal. Why is there even a conversation about feminism? What’s the man version of feminism? There isn’t even a word for it. Menanism. Male-ism. It doesn’t exist.”

And the problems women face? “It’s much the same [as it used to be]. But I don’t think men are the enemy. I think women are the enemy. I know that when I’m sitting in a restaurant and a really beautiful woman walks in, who’s skinny, I instinctively think, ‘Oh, she’s really skinny and beautiful and I’m really fat and ugly.’ So it’s more of a competitive thing. It’s weird. It’s just really unhealthy and we’re our own worst enemy.”

So why then, did Allen make a video lampooning Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’? Was she not having a pop at sexist promo videos? It certainly seemed that way.

Do you feel like having a go at her about all this? Well, the only people allowed to are activists wearing “Australian bush hats with dirty tampons in place of corks.”

Either way, clumsily, Lily Allen will spark a thousand tedious debates (with a handful of good ones, granted) by saying a load of stuff and mouthing the words “I’m trolling you all, you dummies”.
