Manchester City Balls: Moyes Falls For Tabloid Tactics As Pellegrini Makes His Points

by | 25th, March 2014

THE Manuel Pellegrini story is getting to be a bit like George Bush’s plastic turkey. You know that story.? It’s the one about the then President George ‘Dubya’ Bush feeding the US troops a Thanksgiving dinner of plastic turkey. It was utter balls. But the media had a fact they would not let go of. So. Dubya’s plastic turkey became true. Though palpably false, the story lives on.

And so we get to the affable Manchester City manager, Pelligrini. In February 2013, he said:

“If we only consider this season, there is just one club in Manchester and it’s ours. But you cannot forget what United has done in the previous years.”

Last Monday, Pelligrini revisited the phrase:

“What I meant was that in this season the best team is Manchester City because we were at the top of the table. But at the same moment I said that we must recognise what United have done over the last 20 years.”

He had no need to clarify his comment. It was clear.

But David Moyes had read the tabloids and thought it wise to wade in:

“United had lots and lots of seasons of domination. I don’t think I would have turned around and said we were the only club in Manchester because football changes, it goes in cycles.”

No, it goes with money. And, David, we refer you to the bit when Pelligrini praise United and said City were the top club in Manchester “only” for this season. Which they are. By a long way.
