THIS is pretty good of the Daily Mail, rediscovering something that was published only those 150 short years ago. That there’s something to this heredity argument, that children tend to look a bit like their parents and so on. You know, this idea that daughter of pretty woman might be pretty woman sorta thing?

A teen beauty queen has followed in her mother’s high heeled footsteps – by clinching the same beauty pageant title as she did 30 years earlier.

Zara Holland, 18, is now in the running to be made Miss England after being crowned Miss Hull.

But for proud mother, Cheryl Hakeney, 49, her daughter’s victory was extra special – because she herself held the Miss Hull title in 1984, when she was just 19.

Well, OK, we can (and quite possibly do have) different views about how good looking you’ve got to be to be considered a beauty in Hull but what’s the headline that our favourite newspaper decides to put upon this?

Good looks really DO run in the family! Teen beauty queen, 18, in running to become Miss England – just like her mother 30 years before her

Err, yes, yes. That was rather the thing that Darwin was trying to point out. That the physical (and mental, to some extent) attributes of the children will be determined by the DNA they inherit from their parents. 50% from each of them in fact. And their parents looks and mental capacities will be determined, sans accidents, by the DNA they inherited and so on. And that DNA does determine how long the nose grows, the colour of the hair and eyes, big tits or not and so on. Which is why people tend to look quite like their parents, a bit like their grandparents, a little less like their cousins and so on.

Only been 150 years as I say so well done to the Mail for catching up with this.
