THE story goes that Monaco and Colombia’s £38.5m star James Rodríguez could have played for Manchester United.

When he was a teenager, the 22-year-old who wears the name ‘James’ on his shirt was offered to Manchester United for around £5m.

James was just 17 when his reps told the Old Trafford scouts that his performances for Club Atlético Banfield in Argentina were worth a look.

All balls, of course. Untied must be offered hunderds of players every season. Every superstar was once a callow youth with ambition.

And it sounds like a lot of cash for a teen. But, then, United did lash out £25.6 million for 18-year-old Wayne Rooney, and have just spent around £30m on Luke Shaw, 18.

It’s all a bit a bit so-what until United fans recall that instead of James the club invested £7.4m in real money on Bebé. How did that turn out?
