TRANSFER Balls looks at the Guardian’s headline news: “Manchester City offered Monaco’s Radamel Falcao for £55m.” That’s Falcao, of whom the Guardian said on August 7 was “close” to joining Real Madrid.

That was good of Falcao’s club Monaco to offer another club a player for £55m. Almost altriustic.

Manchester City have been offered Monaco’s Radamel Falcao for around £55m (€70m) and are trying to make the deal happen within the constraints of Uefa’s financial fair play system before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday night.

That system is utter balls. If some lunatic wants to spend their billions on footballing flesh, let them. At least it’s above board.

Manuel Pellegrini wants to sign the striker but the sense at the club is that time could run out. City are allowed a net spend of £49m and have around £24m at the moment after Jack Rodwell, Javi García and Gareth Barry departed.

So. Who leaves?

The Guardian answers: Álvaro Negredo, Micah Richards, Matija Nastasic and Scott Sinclair.

Problem is that all City players are on very high wages. So. Why should they leave? And why should any team pay top dollar for players when they know how desperate City are to get Falcao? Wait and get them cheap.

One option that may be explored by City is a loan deal for Falcao, 28…

Yep. That would be an option that “may be explored”. That way, City can keep all the other players on their books and still get Falcao. How’s that Financial Fair Play stystem coming along, Uefa?

Falcao’s camp have been pushing to get him to Real Madrid but have encountered unexpected resistance from the decision-makers at the Bernabéu, although they have not given up hope of concluding that transfer. Falcao deleted a tweet on Saturday that indicated he was moving to the club. He claimed his account had been hacked.

And if Real Madrid don’t get Falcao – who is fantastic – they can always buy “Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado is another on the Spanish club’s radar”.

That radar has picked up Soldado amidst the other other sunken ships at Spurs…

The paper ends its Falcao scoop by reporting:

Tottenham are the favourites to sign [Manchester United’s Danny ]Welbeck, with Arsenal’s need for a striker following Olivier Giroud’s long-term injury potentially tempting them to also consider the 24-year-old. However Welbeck may remain at United…
