Transfer Balls: Arsenal And Manchester United Woo Virgil van Dijk’s Girlfriend From Celtic

by | 6th, September 2014

TRANSFER Balls: Arsenal are going to fight Manchester United and Manchester City for Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk. No, really. We read it in The Metro. Today that paper reports:

Arsenal still keen on January move for Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk

Come again? Arsenal are still keen on buying Virgil van Dijk in January, which is still a few months away? Which begs the question: if they are that keen on him, why didn’t Arsenal buy him in the two-month long transfer window that just shut?

Arsenal are hopeful of sealing a January move for Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk after the Gunners missed out on a transfer deadline day deal.

They did? No. The Mail says they just asked about him at the death:

The Gunners made a deadline day enquiry for the Holland international

But this is the Metro. You can trust the Metro, which reported that van Dijk was on his way to Manchester United, who never did bid for him.

Readers were told that the player’s girlfriend ended the move. Jamie Sanderson wrote:

Manchester United look set to miss out on a summer deal for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk – because his girlfriend doesn’t want to leave Glasgow.

Well, no. What she said was:

“When I was in Holland, they talked about the ‘Celtic Family’ and now I know what they mean” she said. “We had a couple nights out and I enjoyed it a lot. They are very nice and make me very welcome in Glasgow. The Celtic fans are amazing, the sound they make is unreal. I think Celtic is a very good club, the people are very friendly and helpful. Most of the people I meet understand how it is to live in another country, so they help me a lot.”

And then the player was off to Manchester City:

Arsenal and Manchester City are set to lock horns over Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Premier League rivals are both keeping a close eye on the Dutch centre-back who has impressed since joining the Hoops from Eredivisie side Groningen last summer.

Van Dijk, who cost the Scottish champions £1.6million, still has three years to run on his current deal at Celtic Park but should either of the Premier League big guns table a bid of around £10million then The Hoops could be tempted to sell.

They could. And he could have cost more, because the Metro also reports:

The Dutch centre-half has certainly caught the eye since arriving for £2.6m last summer…

Such are the facts…
