Images Of Empire: The National Archives Opens It’s Collection Online

IMAGES of Empire:  The Curators at the National Archives in Kew want you to look at the photos of Africa and help identify what they are of. The collection is called Africa Through A Lens.

The photos were taken at the apogee of the British Empire, housed in the Colonial Office library, which shut in 2005. Earl Granville, was secretary of state for the colonies in the 1860s. He wanted all governors to create a record “noteworthy buildings and scenery … together with individuals peculiar to the colony“.

Get ‘Em Off! The Nostalgia-Proof British Sex Comedy

WE British are scorned by the world for our attitude to sex. Unsophisticated, unromantic, unimaginative, unattractive, unhygienic, inhibited and generally inept – these are the characteristics that spring to the foreign mind when forced to think of our men as potential partners.

And judging by the evidence of the Great British Sex Comedy, you can see why.

The Ghost of Christmas Presents Past: Mr Microphone

THE Ghost of Christmas Presents Past – Number Three: Mr Microphone

LAST month we looked at the K-Tel “Various Artists” compilation albums that took Britain by storm in the Seventies. But that wasn’t the end of the story.

K-Tel was the brainchild of Philip Kives, a salesman from Winnipeg. In the mid-sixties he was flogging new-fangled Teflon pans by demonstrating them on TV. Kives responded by temporarily shifting his attention to records, releasing 25 Great Country Artists Singing Their Original Hits in Canada. Then he set up K-Tel, which sold both gadgets and records, and pushed both with maximum energy and minimum subtlety.

The Times: “Girl, 12, abducted by ‘internet stalker’ on family holiday in France”

Kaya Burgess reports:

A 12-year-old British girl was found sobbing in a French airport after a Belgian man abducted her from a holiday villa and tried to take her on a flight to Madrid. The girl from Glasgow had been staying with her family in a villa in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer in the South of France when she was lured away by a 41-year-old man she had met on the internet.

Paedo. Internet. Foreigners. This story has all the elements of a tabloid hit. But one thing is missing…
