Outted To Lunch By Proposition 8: “Fancy A Shag?”

THE GAY the Day stood still:.

Angered by the passage of a law banning same-sex marriage, gay rights activists are urging people to call in “gay” across the United States and skip work on Wednesday.

Banana Monarchy: Britain Is Bigger Credit Risk Than McDonald’s

ONCE great, Great Britain as now revealed to be a bigger credit default risk than McDonald’s.

Ronald or Gordon? Scotland awaits the answer…

Which one’s in the clown boots?

Dec. 9 (Bloomberg) — Investing in U.K. government debt is almost
twice as risky as buying bonds sold by McDonald’s Corp., based on prices
in the credit-default swap market.

The CHART OF THE DAY compares the cost of protecting against a decline in the creditworthiness of the two borrowers. U.K. protection became more expensive on Sept. 29, when the pound suffered
its biggest one-day loss against the dollar in 16 years after the government took control of Bradford & Bingley Plc, Britain’s biggest lender to landlords.

Britain risks being viewed pejoratively as a banana republic “apart from the technical disqualification that we have a monarch and so cannot be a Republic, and it’s too cold to grow bananas anyway,” says Sean Corrigan, who helps oversee about $8.5 billion as chief investment strategist at Diapason Commodities Management SA in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Yes, we have no bananas, we have no bananas today…

It’s 3am And Barack Obama Is Call Screening

RING! Ring! It’s 3am and the phone is ringing in the offices of Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari.

India is on the phone. India’s foreign minister is on line one. He is most unhappy. Islamabad puts the airforce on high alert.

Anorak wonders if call screening has yet arrived in Pakistan? Call screening may save the world from nuclear annihilation. You see that the call is from the angry man so you don’t pick up. The caller lets off some steam on your answer phone and goes to bed. He tells his wife that he gave the other guy what for and he sleeps well. And the other guy has a fun thing to play his guys. Everyone wins.

If Stalin had had call screening, he could have pretended he knew nothing of a pact with Germany and not left his country open to attack. It’s 3am already, Joe. Don’t pick up the phone.

In other calling news President-elect Barack Obama called Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen on her cellphone Wednesday to congratulate her on her re-election. She hung up on him.

THE 30-bed Hau Sheng Hospital in Yuanlin, central Taiwan, lays claim to being the world’s first Hello Kitty themed medical establishment.

And it gets Anorak wondering what other themed hospitals we could bring to the market.

True Colours Of The Solar Corona, By Miloslav Druckmüller

A TOTAL eclipse. What do you see? Well, best not to look, you may go blind. But what is the color of the solar corona?

The majority of people perceive the corona during eclipse as white or slightly greenish-white. However bluish-white, yellowish-white or reddish-white are often reported too. The problem is in the color perception by human vision which is dependent on the definition (calibration) of white color. The less the color differs from white i.e. the less is the color saturated the more critical is the precision of white color calibration. If we use the natural definition that photospheric light is white, we may distinguish very small but still well detectable differences of solar corona coloring. Suppressing the white color component i.e. increasing of color saturation enables detailed study of the color variation throughout the inner corona.

Humans don’t see all the colours. Imagine if you could?
