Portuguese Police Union Sues British Media Over Madeleine McCann
PAULO Reis in Portugal on Madeleine McCann:
The head of PJ detective’s union confirmed that a libel suit was filed against “two British Media organizations”, because of stories published that were considered defamatory of Poliícia Judiciária. “After we filled it, the British Media moved from attacks against the Portuguese Police to personal attacks against Criminal Coordinator Gonçalo Amaral”, said Carlos Anjos. “They are trying to undermine his credibility, either as a professional or as a individual, insulting him without even respecting his privacy and his family.” The PJ detective’s union president said they were in touch with Gonçalo Amaral and, if he wants to file also a libel suit, he will have the “full support of ASFIC.”
Carlos Anjos rejected accusations from British Media about the alleged incompetence of Portuguese Police, in Madeleine’s investigation, and referred the case of Rhys Jones, a 11-years-old boy who was shot on August 22: “After more than one month, British Police wasn’t able to arrest his killer. In this case, they have more than a dozen witnesses, but until now they have arrested 17 suspects and they sent them free, didn’t charged nobody”
Good to hear the investigation is getting somewhere.

Because the portuguese lawyers do not react to the defamatory acts
against the McCann’s (Moita Flores , Gonçalo Amaram , Correio da Manhã
& Cª.) ???

“If it took 3 days for the Fire Brigade to turn up I would say very reasonable - wouldn’t you?”
Please, read this:
MARTIN FRICKLER, MIRROR, on the paper edition of MAY 5 (reporting the situation on May4):
“Officers sealed off the five-storey holiday block with crime scene tape and fingerprinted the shutters and window sill outside Maddy’s room. A patio to the rear of the block, believed to be attached to the family’s two-bedroom apartment, was also sealed off. By late afternoon (MAY 4…) the hunt for Maddy had intensified with helicopter crews, firemen and maritime search teams involved. A special criminal investigation team from the Policia Judiciria was travelling down from Lisbon.”

Why would someone give a clue and then back away.
If they know something why are they not telling authorities.
Do you think it could be one of the Tapas 9?

I don’t know who poster 583 was.
Her poster name said Scarlett. And again I repeat her post.

This is my one and only post on this site, ever. I will say this only once. The Renault Scenic is a total red herring. Go back to 3rd May.

Reply to Susannah and Tony Bennett:
The intriguing one-off post from “Scarlett” yesterday immediately sent my recollections back to a thread on the Mirror forums titled: “Note to team Gerry (part V) They know where you went.”
Out of the blue (seemingly) there is mention of a Nissan Micra in the thread and the claim (similar to Scarlett’s) that the Renault Scenic is merely a red herring.
There was something about that thread which seemed feasible, with the ring of truth about it.
Maybe just another red herring in itself but thoughts to ponder at least.

New DNA evidence to provide fresh link to parents.
This is London.
Tried to link but did not work.
So despite all the tabloid crap this morning about DNA being inconclusive the truth is somewhat different.
Will one of you try to link it.

Perhaps poster 583 was the MW nanny Poddington/Wighton who reported Madeleine at the resort having tea until 6pm on 3rd May
October 8th, 2007 at 11:52 am
According to Paulo Reis the McCann legal team would like the British Police to review the case.
I guess this is now that they have consolidated their stories and can get it to make perfect sense.
The Leistershire Police should have nothing to do with it - let us give it to Scotland Yard.
Fuck, obviously Clarence is back on the street.
Can’t we dress him up in a bikini and sent him to Afghanistan

It took 3 days for the police to show up? News to me. Haven’t heard this angle before, but if it’s true, I’m stunned. Is it not possibly true that the police are faced with a case which does not fit the usual missing/disappeared child/person profile?

The truth lies in the first night that Madeleine disappeared. The dna, cars etc may confirm things eventually but until that first night’s evenings events are clear so that people are looking in the right direction there is no chance of this being solved.
I cannot believe it is five months since her disappearance. I hope that, unbeknown to all of us, there are great strides taking place in the detection of this crime.
The things I found concerning
1. Gerry wanted to be the only spokesman for his whole group (if this is true)
2. Gerry’s blog at this time seemed strange, more like someone wanting to control the message than a true reflection of seeking help to find Madeleine.
3. Although someone eventually posted a link to Gerrys blog on this forum, until then all historic posts seemed to have been ‘lost’ on the web.
4. Is there a link from the official website to other missing children? I cannot see one.
If Gerry can fly to the white house in aid of missing children, could they feature a child a day link for other missing children. It would not cost the fund anything (I think they can only use left over money from the campaign for this purpose) to have a link to the official missing person website or have a link to feature a child a day.
I knew of a case years ago where a child went missing. Because it was from a marriage between a british person and someone who lived in eastern europe they did not get much help because it had to be assumed that the other parent had taken them abroad. These are the sort of cases that may be able to be solved by a higher profile on an individual child.
I know Madeleine is very important but so is every child to their parent.

147 - Garth, if I fell asleep smoking and my house burned down, supposing I got out alive, how reasonable do you think I would be to criticise the Fire Brigade? Whose fault is it that the PJ HAVE to investigate this case in the first place?

Susannah re post 583.
Yes, I noted this tantalising post.
My hunch is that this is from someone who does have knowledge about the case.
I don’t agree that the Renault Scenic is a complete and utter red herring, because of the strange way the McCann sources responded to the suggestions of Madeleine’s DNA being found in the spare wheel well of the car - and how tney say the interior of the car was ‘ripped out’.
But, yes, I have always been very interested in the timeline for 3 May and would just once again summarise these observations:
1. I am not 100% convinced that the ‘2.29pm’ pictire of Nadeleine alive - on a photo with Gerry and Amelie by the Mark Warners’ swimming pool - is genuine. I note it was not released until, I think, day 21 after Madeleine ‘disappeared’
2. The so-callefd sighting of Gerry dancing with Madeleine outside a beach-side restaurant, and then them all havig a meal together in the restaurant is false - the CCTV video of this does not positively identify them by a long way
3. I do not believe we have any official confirmation from the PH or Mark Warners or anyone from the kids’ club/creche that she was in the kid’s club/creche that afternoon, or even that day, despite claims from ’sources close to the McCanns’
4. I discount enterely the story that David Payne came up with on Day 144 after Madeleine’s disappearance that he ’saw Madeleine being put to bed’ at around 7.00pm. Why did he wait 144 days?
5. I note that a ’source close to the McCanns’ says that Gerry McCann and the other 3 ‘Tapas 9′ males were involved in, quote, ‘a social tennis event’ from around 5.30pm to around 6.30pm/7.00pm. I think it is possible that the four men were together at around this time, but not playing ’social tennis’
It would be great of poster 583 could come back with a little mor eof a clue. but I suspect s/he won’t
3.

Edna
Do you think the ‘ in light of all the mistakes made from the outset’ that the PJ have done a good job? Bearing in mind of course that leaks to the Portuguese press were made by the head of the investigation fueled all the speculation. And again, bearing in mind that the PJ operate under a strict ‘code of silence’.
Do you not think it is any wonder?

Bravo for you. I’m not Portuguese, but I may as well be since I’ve lived here such a long time and am married to a Portuguese man. Your words of support are so welcome.
Recently, friends and acquaintances who once really liked Brits, don’t anymore and it’s all because of the bloody tabs and also comments made on forums and Anorak is also guilty of casting disparaging remarks against the police and press. I’m so glad to see it turning around.
As to the numbers not being seen, I have no problem and use Firefox. I agree with the comments about the small blue font.
Thanks again, tony.

Maria, Laura, Krissie,Jolie.
There are flaws in the Police, not matter what country you live in. The PJ, I am sure, are doing their utmost to solve this highly publicised issue. The appointment of a new chief detective is welcome, as would be any support from the British police.
The police have not been helped by ’second guess’ journalism and a plethora of experts (Krugel et al.) throwing in their views/opinions/evidence.
The claim that the PJ or its’ union will sue British newspapers is interesting? Will this spur the McCanns to pursue their threatened action against a portuguese newspaper?
The health of G&K McCann is an interesting subject. Let us not forget, that G&K were able to conduct a 100 day campaign to publicise the hunt for their missing daughter, whilst caring for 2 children (If they weren’t in the creche) and continue their keep-fit regime. I would not have been able to do this with my first-born missing.
Again, their has been innumerable comments regarding the morality of leaving your children alone in an apartment. This is at the core of why people are so divided on the subject, and yes, that is stating the obvious. But the way in which we have been subjected to a barrage of contradicting, provocative behaviours has pushed me to the view that G&K, and the whole machine around them is at the core of the issue.
If they had gone to ground, gave a few interviews and retained a level of ‘normal’ humility, then this would be a different blog. why can they not leave it to the PJ to get on with it? If absoluteley 100% innocent, then why the caravan of love (Lawyers/campaign managers/psychics/PR/fund trustees/financial backers)
If they were to look inwardly, the cheque from the Leicester Mercury for 57K should immediately have been donated to another cause. This would have swayed some doubters as to their real intentions.
another honourable action would be for one of the parents to return to work? Just because they are arguidos, this does not stop gainful employment? Again, this would be a reconcilliatory step?
The british and portugueses press may be at loggerheads, but I have no doubt the paying public can see through the headline-grabbing spin.

140 - Thanks, Paulo. One of my colleagues from work left for a week’s vacation in Portugal yesterday. It is good to know that ordinary people our not allowing this tragic event to spoil our good relations.

Amarality Tale,
And you can be sure you will always be received with the usual simpathy of the Portuguese people, when you come here, on hollidays, or business. It’s not a few tabloids and a spin doctor that can make all of us, Portuguese people, change our opinion about British people.
By the way, I have a son who is studying in UK, in a British University…

4 - Tony, I agree. I always thought Britain and Portugal were sort of allies. Are there deeper reasons for starting something with a relatively friendly country? They’re not after Gib, and they don’t, that I know of, fish our waters as much as Spain does? Or do they? There are a lot of Portuguese workers over here, though not as much as Polish! I hope Gordon and his mate Gerry don’t screw up our good relations with Portugal. Never been there myself, but this business wouldn’t put me off going.

Likewise, congratulations.
