Madeleine McCann: Melissa Fiering Knows, CCTV And The ‘Mark Of Madeleine’
MADDYWATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY STAR: “French child was not Maddie”
Melissa Fiering was mistaken
DAILY MIRROR: “This is the first image of the man a student claims she saw with Madeleine McCann in a cafe.”
An image. a drawing of a man who looks like a cross between Johnny Depp and KD Lang.
Melissa Fiering, 18, described the dark-skinned male to sketch artist Emre Altin, 28, exclusively for the Mirror.
Speaking at her home in Nijmegen, Holland, yesterday, the travel and tourism student said of the police-style e-fit: “This is definitely an accurate likeness of the man I saw. I’d recognise him straight away if the police found him”
McCanns beg to see French CCTV film of man and girl - Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns’ spokesman, says: “We want to see the video of this girl. French police have not officially discounted that it is Madeleine so we’re still waiting to hear whether they believe this to be the case.
“If the French police can categorically assure us it is not Madeleine then we will have to take their word for it, but despite this they should let Kate and Gerry see the footage. This is their daughter we are talking about”
DAILY MAIL: “MCCANNS BEG TO SEE CCTV FOOTAGE OF ‘SIGHTING’ OF MADELEINE IN FRANCE”
Kate and Gerry McCann tonight urged French police to show them CCTV footage of a suspected sighting of daughter Madeleine in the South of France.
Although it appears French police have ruled out the possibility it is the four-year-old her parents want to see the surveillance video from a French diner where a Dutch tourist reported seeing the missing British girl
BBC: “How common is Madeleine’s eye defect?2
Referred to as the “mark of Madeleine” the blemish on the four-year-old’s right eye has played a key part in the campaign to highlight her disappearance, emphasised in posters and videos…
The blemish is called a coloboma of the iris. Its precise incidence is not recorded in the UK, but figures suggest it occurs in about 0.007% of the population. A 1989 study in China found two cases in a survey of 26,512 children under 12 years of age. That would mean a prevalence of 7.5 per 100,000.

another silly cow gets her 15 mins of fame by spotting maddy.
and the press pay good money for such rubbish.
in a few years time people will still be spotting a little blond girl just like people claim elvis is alive and jesus performed miracles
the feeble minded cling to such things

The sketch is really poor. I feel sorry for the 28-year old if he thinks he is an “artist”. In my honest opinion , that’s time to change job.

I know, and I’ve just pinched this one from there by Anne…..
“I don’t think anyone, us on Anorak for definite, will ever forget Madeleine if only for the way certain people exploited her, because that is what they surely did”
Not campaigned but exploited. No pleasing anyone is there?

There was hundreds of sightings in the first couple of months, the majority ignored because they hadn’t seen the eye.
They were offered help from charities dealing with people smuggling and lost children in Northern Europe, these were ignored.
There were many sightings on Malta in the early days, they didn’t travel there!
These are all things that I would have done and they didn’t.

Well I thought I had.
The publicity campaign
The private investigators
The reason I ask is because I would seriously like to know what people would expect them to do to try and get their daughter back.
February 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pm
or briefing the press
February 22nd, 2008 at 5:41 pm
Sorry Garth, postings crossed.
It was you who stated “The McCanns (irrespective of what people say) are doing as much as they possibly can under the circumstances.”
I can understand your interest in what others may do, but that’s a red herring. It is of no significance what anyone else would do, as no-one else is in their precise position.
So can you back up your earleir statement, or can you not?
I’ll try and look in later, but must go now.
February 22nd, 2008 at 5:40 pm
garth - whatever i would do in that situation - i would certainly NOT be briefing the pree about it.
February 22nd, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Got to go now - unfortunate that Garth didn’t follow up this chat - obviously he couldn’t think of anything the McCanns are doing either.
As we used to say on here - maybe next week something will happen!!
Have a good weekend!

So you can’t answer.
I don’t believe they are doing nothing. However, they are being very re-active and not at all pro-active. There are never any initiatives coming from camp McCann. They don’t actually get off their arses and do something relevant or useful themselves.
I am still willing to accept that abduction is a possibility in this case, albeit a very slight possibility, but the McCanns total failure to do anything themselves is one of many factors which leads people to discount the abduction theory.

Aardvarko
Its not that i cant answer, Im just interested in what people think they should do? For example, RR says they should get on a plane to France? Ian makes a comment that we get sighting after sighting, basically saying its pathetic. But why do we get sighting after sighting? Is it because the McCanns have sat on their arses and done nothing to make people aware? Their choice of private investigators are critised, and I might add, for good reason, however, they are under contract. Will it be renewed? Unlikely is my bet.
But what can they do that is so pro-active as you suggest? Search the streets of PDL maybe? I dont know. Its a big place out there.
Seriously,

Nooooo! Im not syaing that (though M3 might stoop to such a thing!).
No, I’m saying they have created an atmosphere where - like UFO’s - people are now going to be spotting Madeleine everywhere and forever.
——————-
Im sure your attitude would change if it were you and you had a 3 year old daughter that went missing. False sightings or not, maybe just one of them,( and it only takes one remember), could end their and their daughters nightmare!
The McCanns (irrespective of what people say) are doing as much as they possibly can under the circumstances.
As abduction really does have to be accepted as one of a number of theories, I’d suggest that everyone started treating it as that, a possibility, an unlikely one of course but still a possibility.
Unlikely? Why? And how are you so sure?
Equal credence must be given to the otehr possibilities, one of which is that the parents were involved (beyond providing means and opportunity).
So, if equal credence should be given then maybe you (in particular) should take that on board. Especially as y ou’ve just stated it?
February 22nd, 2008 at 5:09 pm
I think whats happened is not that someone has said something anti-McCann - something may be about to move on this case at last.
February 22nd, 2008 at 5:08 pm
The McCanns will never be able to bring any actions against anyone for anything they say on the internet.
They are never going to be able to prove libel.
Why am I so sure? Simple. To try will put them in a courtroom - they sure as hell dont want to be in a courtroom!
February 22nd, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I would guess that a poster went too far in the Express or Star, action was thratened and to be safe everything was pulled. It happens… same as the Mirror.
As Anorak knows I’m sure, there is a line that must not be crossed. Some try it here… Speculation is one thing, stating untruths as facts is another.
Hence I have problems with the Joana Morais blog being constantly quoted here. It’s a blog and its skewed to her views. Same as the Aussie guy.
I could write whatever I wanted about Madeleine McCann and all her relatives on my blog…. I could write absolutely anything at all to suit my own theories but it wouldn’t be facts, it would be my perceptions.
I’m sure the McCann legal team will be looking at everything everywhere and I have to say, I don’t blame them.
Google is a fantastic tool for litigants.

I’m only in my second year, so maybe no buds have budded yet!
I believe it would depend on the purpose to which it were being collected, but I do not believe that it would be have to be withdrawn unless it were the object of the action itself. Continuing to display a libellous article, for example, would be ill advised - though unless there was an injunction slapped on it I dont think it would HAVE to be withdrawn.
