Is Gary Glitter sexing Gorilla’s at Blackpool Zoo?

by | 25th, January 2012

EVER since Gary Glitter turned up on twitter, we’ve been wondering where the paedophile would turn up next. Then we read the BBC headline “Blackpool Zoo uses glitter to identify gorilla poo” and we wondered.

Reading on, however, we discovered that the Lancashire zoo is using glitter to measure reproductive hormone levels in a female gorillas called Njema. Glitter is mixed with yogurt fed to Njema.  This helps her zoo be more redily identified. The glitter turds are then rushed to the lab for study.

Says Peter Dillingham, animal manager at the zoo:

“We would have hoped to have had a positive pregnancy test by now. We know that Bukavu [Njema’s mate] is fertile as he fathered the first baby Western Lowland Gorilla ever to be born at Blackpool Zoo, who will turn two in May. Surprisingly, you can get a lot of information about hormone levels from a gorilla’s faeces but we needed to be able to tell which was Njema’s. Our first idea was sweetcorn, which worked until our gorillas realised it is just as edible the second time round.”

Anyone still wondering why Njema is not pregnant?
