Amanda Knox: Kercher lawyer wants new trial as work starts on autobiographies

by | 14th, February 2012

AMANDA Knox may yet return to court. Lawyers acting for murdered British student Meredith Kercher are asking Italy’s Supreme Court today to overturn the appeal ruling that freed Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito.

In Perugia, the prosecutors presented to court a 112-page appeal against the successful appeal.

Says the Kercher’s lawyer, Francesco Maresca in Florence:

“We are petitioning against the decision of the Court of Appeals of Perugia and are optimistic it will be admitted to the Court of Cassation for review.”

If the Court of cassation finds reason to doubt the appeal verdict, another trial could take place.

The Week reports:

The petition to the highest court of Italy follows a spate of orchestrated leaks from across the Atlantic hyping a “bidding war” over the rights to Amanda Knox’s memoir and her lawyers’ decision to appeal her slander conviction for accusing African immigrant Patrick Lumumba of the murder while she was being interrogated.

She never recanted her accusation to authorities and Lumumba stayed two weeks in jail until his alibi was independently confirmed and the DNA of another African man, Rudy Guede, was discovered at the scene of the crime. Guede was convicted of involvement in Kercher’s murder “along with others” at all three Italian judicial levels.

Knox’s recent announcement that she will appeal her slander conviction is financially strategic for her deeply indebted family because should she win, she would be eligible for additional compensation from the Italian state for wrongful imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Knox and Raffaele Sollecito are staring work on their books. His agent Sharlene Martin tells CNN:

“He’s never really spoken about that night and this is his opportunity to do so. There’s much more to Raffaele than what the world has seen. He is an amazing young man.”

But what can he say? And surely he has spoken about that night – when Kercher was killed, You’d imagine, Sollectio has spoken more about that night in his life than he has about nay other. Would you buy the book? Would you buy her book? And what could you expect to find in it?

Will Knox ever be able to move on from her ordeal? Get this in the Sun today:

Knox strolls around her old university as her life returns to normal after she was cleared of murdering British student Meredith Kercher. The American, 24, listened to music on her headphones as she visited the Washington University campus. She was also seen cycling, chatting on the phone and shopping in her home city of Seattle.

When wearing headphones is deemed newsworthy, your life is far from normal…
