Record Store Day – making the past stay alive (photos)
IN honour of Record Store Day, a celebration of independently owned record stores we want you to name the record shops you used to visit – or still do. (Loppy Luggs, anyone?) Vinyl has not gone away in Europe. Martin Belam recalls his time working in Reckless Records. As he says: ”Everything I know about second-hand record retail I learnt by being rude to customers at Reckless Records.” I remember picking records and having my selection challenged by the shop owner, who as cultural historian and librarian was keen to help. I still ended up with something by the Thompson Twins…

I was an unofficial ‘intern’ at underground records in Manchester, 1975-77, I would operate the till, spin some awesome 45s, latest imports from Jamaica and rare singles, catalogue the stock and basically just wind and grind to the music that I got to choose to play! I was 16 yrs old, and found myself DJing every Saturday under the streets of the city centre! Happy, inspirational and unforgettable days. Ryddim, come forward….

@p.s A trip down memory lane for you then. The Current Mrs Y used to work at Rare Records when it was in John Dalton St in the City Centre. She also remembers Hime and Addison, Spin Inn, Marshalls Record Centre and Ansells, aka Barry’s Record Rendezvous which had the best Soul. Plus Robinsons and Paul Marsh in Whalley Range.

I used to work at weekends in Underground Records in Manchester, a small shop specialising in selling mainly reggae music, mixed in with pop & Irish folk….those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end.
