Transfer Balls: Adam Lallana Leaves Manchester United For Liverpool

by | 9th, May 2014

IS Adam Lallana staying at Southampton? Let’s see what the experts are saying?

The Sun has an “exclusive”:

Kop in £20m bid for Lallana

The Liverpool fans in their famous stand have raised millions to buy the player? No. The story is:

LIVERPOOL have made a £20million swoop for Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana.

But the transfer season hasn’t started. Premier League rules dictate that the transfer period begins on the final day of the season. Liverpool can talk to Southampton, at any time, of course. But no transfer can be done.

And hasn’t Lallana already signed for Manchester United? As The Daily Star screamed in December 2013:

EXCLUSIVE: Man Utd to pounce for Southampton star Adam Lallana – MANCHESTER UNITED are poised to make a January move for Adam Lallana.

Of course, that was utter balls. No move came. No bid was tabled.

The odd thing about today’s  Sun’s scoop is how the story of Lallana’s move ended up in the Press. Is it all a PR exercise to drive up fees and keep Liverpool fans excited? Just two days earlier, the Daily Mail reported:

Adam Lallana delivers hope to Southampton fans he’ll stay after cleaning up awards

And the Mirror :

Liverpool target Adam Lallana hints he will stay at Southampton after winning the club’s Player of the Year award

How did he hint that?

…the Saints’ skipper suggested he may well stay on the south coast after sweeping up at the club’s end of season awards ceremony.

After winning three Player of the Year trophies, he said: “The club means the world to me. I’ve been here since I was 12 and I want to keep progressing with the club. I’ve got a great relationship with the fans. We’ve been on a journey, and this is the icing on the cake.”
