HURRAH for Barry Rigby winner of the World Pie Eating Champion at Harry’s Bar in Wigan. Mr Rigby was crowned at the 2009 champion after taking just 47 seconds to finish the regulation pie – diameter of 12cm and a depth of 3.5cm, a pie wall angle from base to top of between zero and 15 degrees; minimum content cube dimensions of the meat and potato mix are 1cm, and they must have 66% meat content not including pastry. There was controversy in the build up. Competition boss Tony Callaghan said: “Gravy has traditionally been the performance-enhancing drug of choice amongst pie eaters at this level, but since we banned it, contenders have been trying to find other ways of generating lubricative advantage — we’re hearing rumours that cough mixture is the new Bisto.”
