In Photos: Susan Boyle Sings For the Pope Who Wasn’t There

POPE Benedict XVI’s mass in Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park featured three supporting stars. There was Maria Tyszczak, handed up to the Pope’s ice-cream van by her mother Marzena Tyszczak. No 99 with a flake. But she did get a kiss. (Awwwww.) There was Michelle McManus, who won the second series of Pop Idol, back when karaoke was something you did in the pub with a few drunk pals and wasn’t yet prime time telly for Simon Cowell’s pap factory.

And there was Susan Boyle, who resisted the urge to hip thrust at the Pontiff, who, in any case was already heading back to his car when she started singing. He’d soon be on another flight to London and a meeting with Boris Johnson and more supporters. It was a busy day for the Pope, who only usually works Sundays…
