Not Smashie and Nicey: Dave Lee Travis arrested as part of Operation Yewtree

by | 15th, November 2012

UPS and downs for Dave Lee Travis. In June 2011, the former BBC Radio 1 DJ was revealed to be Suu Kyi’s lifeline. Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader, revealed the source of an unlikely lifeline when she was under house arrest – Hairy Cornflake Dave Lee Travis. The Nobel Peace Prize winner, who had spent 15 years under house arrest since 1989, said the DJ’s request show on the World Service helped make her “world much more complete“. Travis’s other great claim to fame was a resignation from Radio 1, telling the audience “…changes are being made here which go against my principles and I just cannot agree with them…”

So long, Smashie and Nicey.

Fast forward one year and Dave Lee Travis has been arrested.

Dave Lee Travis has become the third celebrity to be arrested in Jimmy Savile BBC scandal as part of Operation Yewtree. He has been questioned by police on suspicion of sexual offences. He was taken to Aylesbury police station. Say the police:

“The man, from Bedfordshire, was arrested at 07.45 hrs on suspicion of sexual offences and has been taken into police custody. The individual falls under the strand of the investigation we have termed ‘Others’”.

Dave Lee Travis’s arrest is not related directly to alleged abuse by Savile. But he finds himself bridled with Freddie Starr, convicted paedophile Gary Glitter and former BBC producer Wilfred De’ath.  Now there’s a name.  All deny any wrongdoing. Savile remains dead.

Says Travis of the claims that he sexually assaulted two women:

“It’s nonsense, completely untrue. If police get in touch, I’m happy to get it sorted. I hate being tarred with the same brush as Savile.”

In other witch hunt news, the BBC has agreed damages with Lord McAlpine, the innocent Tory peer it hooked into the peado scandal. Says he:

“They could have saved themselves a lot of agonising, and money actually, if they had just made that telephone call. They should have called me and I would have told them exactly what they learned later on – that it was complete rubbish and that I had only ever been to Wrexham once in my life…It [his reputation] can be repaired to a point. But there is a British proverb which is insidious and awful where people say ‘there’s no smoke without a fire’, you know, ‘he appears to be innocent, but…’ It’s very difficult, and so this is the legacy that sadly the BBC have left me with.”

He’s not wrong is he.

Wonder if DLT played any of these hits..?
