Jailed Boy George’s Sympathetic Back Story

by | 16th, January 2009

BOY George has been convicted of falsely imprisoning a male escort in his flat in Shoreditch, east London, and jailed for 15 months.

Boy George will not be sweeping the streets. Boy will be in jail, although not in chains and flagellated in just his pants.

George O’Dowd, as is his wont, maintains the victim, Norwegian Audun Carlsen,  had stolen photos from his laptop. O’Dowd says he handcuffed Carlsen to a wall in order to trace the missing property.

Anorak wonders where George began his search.

Says Judge Radford:

“Whilst I accept that Mr Carlsen’s physical injuries were not serious or permanent, in my view there can be no doubt that your premeditated callous and humiliating handcuffing and detention of Mr Carlsen shocked, degraded and traumatised him.

“He was deprived of his liberty and human dignity without warning or proper explanation to him of its purpose, length or purported justification.”

And George is one for dignity and didn’t defend himself in court because his mum is ill.

“I couldn’t do it for mum’s sake. She’s dying. The only reason I didn’t give evidence was for her. She’s been through too much already. I’ll probably get sent down for this even though I’m innocent.”

That’s the sympathetic background story dealt with. Now for the appeal:

Following the sentencing, O’Dowd’s solicitor, Steven Barker, said:

“George is on the road to recovery, I sincerely hope this sentence does not knock him back.”

It’s a celebrities last defence – help me to help myself…
