Two Police Dogs ‘Boil To Death’ In Keston Kent: Police Handler Ian Craven Slits Wrists
TWO police dogs have been killed by the heat as they sat in a car at the Met’s dog training centre in Keston, Kent.
The news is on the font pages:
The Sun: “Police dogs roast to death in cop car”
The paper piles on the gore:
A source told The Sun: “It was a horrible way to die. They literally boiled to death.”
The Mirror: “Two dots roast alive in cop car”
The two dogs are Metropolitan Police dogs – a German Shepherd puppy named Tilly and a working Belgian Malinois called Chay. They were not in a police car, as the Sun and Mirror say they were. The BBC says they were in a civilian vehicle.
The Mail looks at the dog hander:
Two police dogs, one of them a puppy, died when their handler left them locked in his car on one of the hottest days of the year. The officer, Sergeant Ian Craven, one of the country’s most experienced dog trainers, slashed his wrists when he learnt of their deaths.
The Mirror reprots:
An internal investigation was being held into the incident on Sunday – and it is believed Sgt Craven may yet face a possible criminal prosecution. Last night it emerged that he was previously disciplined over the death of a spaniel at the Met police training centre in July, 2004, but he was later promoted to the rank of sergeant.
We wait more news of that. But a similar tragedy has occurred before:
Two years ago a Nottinghamshire police officer left two dogs to bake to death in his car. Constable Mark Johnson, 40, who left his two German shepherds to die in July 2009, was given a six-month conditional discharge and fined £2,500 last year.
Is this typical? Do cases like this go unreported..?
