Police Slam Blackpool’s Christian Cafe For Broadcasting ‘Homophobic’ Passages

by | 28th, September 2011

JAMIE Murray’s Christian cafe broadcasts passages from the Bible on a telly.

The Salt and Light cafe in Layton, Blackpool, Lancashire, has been spoken to by the police about the messages which are, apparently, homophobic.

Says he:

“I was not told what the offending words were.”

We would advise looking them up. The story goes that the verses breach Section Five of the Public Order Act. You can look that up, too.

Says Mr Murray:

“I was quite incredulous at the way they treated me. There was very little respect and they were quite aggressive. I did say to the police, ‘are you seriously telling me I could be arrested for playing the Bible quietly on a screen?’. I was told, ‘it’s offensive and homophobic material we are against’.”

Has he no idea what passage might be offensive? The BBC offers:

Mr Murray said he thought the verses that might have prompted the visit were from Romans chapter one, verses 26-27, which use the terms “against nature” and “indecent acts”.

He adds, incredulously:

“I was just incredulous because as we all know the list of things that we find offensive is massive and varied and we don’t expect the police to get involved.”

Lancashire Police issue a statement:

“It appears that the officer has misinterpreted the Public Order Act and we have apologised to the cafe owner for any distress we may have caused.”

Mr Murray has done no wrong. Moreover, rumours that his scones are as hard as nails are wide of the mark, to say nothing of being offensive to nails enthusiasts…
