Hundreds Of Indian Girls Called Unwanted Change Their Names
TO India, where nominative determinism has caused parents to name their Nakusha – that means unwanted in Hindi. Sorry, little ladies, mum and dad would have preferred a boy, and they never ant you to forget how you disappointed them.
Charming, eh.
But the state of Maharashtra has set about change: 200 Indian girls have been renamed.
But the statistics point to something more sinister than girls falling victim to name calling: in 2011 the country recorded 914 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of six; in 2001, there were 927 for every 1,000 boys. In Satara, where the ceremony took place, there are 880 females to every 1,000 males.
Odd, indeed, given that, on average, women outlive men.
