Christina Annesley

Daily Mail

Christina Annesley died on holiday. The young British woman was travelling when she died on the Thai island of Koh Tao. Terrible news. But can the news of a woman’s death from natural caues be spun and sensationalised? Yep:

The Daily Mail reports – and this is the URL of the scoop:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2921704/Young-British-tourist-dies-unknown-circumstances-Koh-Tao-island-two-UK-backpackers-murdered.html

The story runs:

Christina Annesley, 23, from Orpington in south London, was part-way through a four-month trip across south-east Asia when she died on Wednesday.
She was found dead on the island of Koh Tao- the same location where British backpackers David Miller and Hannah Witheridge were found murdered last September.

But Christina Annesley’s death has nothing to do with those murders.

The media is using murder to sell a young woman’s death. Are deaths always sold with murder? If so, this just in from a hospital in Leeds:

“Mr Smith, who has been battling cancer for years, died in the same city where The Yorkshire Ripper used to prowled for his victims”

“John Tyler died from his injuries sustained in a car accident in Hungerford, where Micahel Ryan murdered 16 people in 1987”

Over in the Express the links between an young woman death from natual casuse and two bloody murders is also made overt:

The Telegraph is just as sensationalist:

So too is the tabloid-hating Guardian:

But the bottom of the barrel is occupied by The Metro:

A British tourist backpacking through Thailand has been found dead on the same island where Hannah Witheridge and David Miller were murdered last year. Christina Annesley, 23, from Orpington in south London, died in as-yet unknown circumstances on Wednesday part-way through a four-month trip across south-east Asia.

Christina Annesley was not raped. She was not murdered. She died from natural causes in the what should have been the prime of her life. That’s tragic enough…
