Transfer Balls: Manchester United target and Arsenal fan Bastian Schweinsteiger wants to play for Chelsea?

Transfer Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Transfer Balls: a look at Manchester United targert and apparent Arsenal fan Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The Guardian reports today: “Bastian Schweinsteiger can choose whether to leave Bayern Munich”

Bastian Schweinsteiger will be given the choice of whether to stay or leave Bayern Munich, Pep Guardiola has said…

“If Schweinsteiger wants to stay here then that’s perfect. He’s a top player,” Guardiola, the Bayern coach, said. “Of course I am planning to work with Basti next season. Basti has to decide. Basti has managed a great career. He must decide what he does alone. I told him, the future depends on you.”

But three days ago the Mirror said Schweinsteiger had made his mind up:

Bastian Schweinsteiger is prepared to snub Manchester United after declaring he wants to win a fourth successive Bundesliga title with Bayern

But just before that, on June 25, the Daily Star reported:

Bastian Schweinsteiger close to Manchester United switch – BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER is said to be on the verge of joining Manchester United

The Star forgot to name the source who said the German was “on the verge” of joining United. The smart money is on it being someone at the Daily Star.

Aside from the obvious mainstream media rubbish, what is interesting is what the Sunday Times reported in 2010:

Bastian Schweinsteiger reveals wish to play in Premier League – The German star admits he is a big admirer of English football and cites Chelsea and Manchester United as clubs he would like to play for

He said:

“What I love is the atmosphere in English stadiums. When we played last year in Manchester it was fantastic. My brother is a big fan of Man U and he always says, ‘Go to Man U, go to Man U’. I say, ‘I can’t, I can’t’. Maybe they can swap me for Rooney,” he jokes.

“I love the kind of speed of the English game but I don’t know what will happen with me. I have a contract until 2012 and we’ll see. I watch the English games on TV and I like the Chelsea style at the moment. They’re very strong.”

And there was the news that Basti loves – just loves – Arsenal:

Such are the facts.
