Cathriona White: Jim Carrey ‘laughs’ as the Sun wonders if Twitter and Scientology killed her

by | 1st, October 2015

More news on Cathriona White, who died earlier in what looks a lot like a suicide. Having pretty much ignored the body to focus on the fact that White once dated Hollywood actor Jim Carrey, the Sun today writes:

EXCLUSIVE: Carrey suicide ex-girl was missing family

His family?

JIM Carrey’s tragic ex-girlfriend Cathriona White had become embroiled in the bizarre Hollywood cult of Scientology, pals revealed last night.

Scientology is classified as nuts. The “pal” is one Kristina Ho, who says:

“She was a sweet girl. She talked about her family in Ireland a lot. She missed her family.”

We also hear of a Scientology expert:

Tony Ortega, who writes a daily blog on Scientology, has claimed two of Cat’s pals say she was taking classes at the cult’s Hollywood Celebrity Centre… Ortega, 52, claimed Cathriona was introduced to the cult through pals of the rocker Beck, 45, who was brought up in the religion.

Religion or cult? Can Scientology be both?

Ortega wrote: “Her friends tell us Cathriona got involved in Scientology four to five years ago through members of Beck’s circle of friends. They encouraged her to move to the US from Ireland and take Scientology courses.”

Ortega claimed Cathriona’s pals were worried when she rekindled her on-off romance with Carrey six months ago. But he said they were assured by Scientologists she was prepared for the relationship because she had just undergone her “purification rundown” — a regimen of daily sauna sessions and huge doses of the vitamin niacin.

Ortega’s post can be read here.

The Daily Mail has read it. It laughably claims the story as its own scoop:

EXCLUSIVE: Jim Carrey’s tragic ex was a Scientologist and was taking an intensive ‘survival’ course at the religion’s celebrity center

The Sun then introduces Brigid, Cathriona’s mother, and her step-father Brian, who says:

“My wife is devastated and struggling to come to terms with it.”

The family have released a statement:

“Cathriona was a shining light in our lives who was loved deeply by her entire family. We will miss her terribly.”

The Sun then adds:

Carrey was photographed laughing with a string of women hours after his latest split from Cat on Thursday.

But if monstering Carrey and riffing on Scientolooigy were not enough, the Sun then looks at social media’s role in the woman’s death:

Cathriona posted a cry for help on Twitter that evening, writing: “Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest.” Friend Judd Weiss, 35, an LA estate agent, said last night: “Because it was Twitter nobody replied. If she’d written it on Facebook somebody would have been over to see her straight away.”

Killed by Twitter? And there’s another comment on Carrey:

But as Cathriona struggled to cope with the split, Carrey attended a party for mysterious artist Blakhat at Milk Studios in Hollywood, wearing a T-shirt that read: “Call my agent.”

Seeking blame for a young woman’s suicide is crass and ugly.
