The Queen Mother’s Ska And Other Criminal Records

by | 14th, March 2011

THE Queen Mother’s record collection – not medical but musical – have been opened to the public.

Paul Hardcastle’s ode to stammering in the face of battle, n-n-n-n 19, fails to make the cut, as do All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth and Smack My Bitch Up.

Instead, the Queen’s Mum owned recordings by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Montana Slim, Paul Simon, the wartime speeches of Winston Churchill, jokes by Tony Hancock and The Goons, an LP by The Desperadoes Steel Orchestra, a song called Thank U Very Much, Elgar’s Coronation Ode, Greensleeves, a Salvation Army Band LP, Edith Piaf, Fiddler’s Dram,

The Queen Mother’s official biographer, William Shawcross, adds:

“During one of her trips to the Caribbean in the Sixties she was introduced to ska music, which she became very fond of.”

God save the queen – and God help her Caribbean pals:
