Madeline McCann: Seeking Andrew Gosden, Not Denise Pipitone And Demonising Gypsies
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann
THE TIMES: “One year on, missing Andrew Gosden is still a blank space in family’s heart”
Andrew Godsen is missing. He ran away form home one year ago. He was 14. Watch the parents…
As with the parents of Madeleine McCann, the Gosdens are leading a life suspended. Unlike the McCanns, they have not done so in a blaze of global publicity and suspicion. Mr Gosden said that he and his wife felt “deeply, deeply sorry” for Gerry and Kate McCann and suspected that the two families “have an awful lot in common”, in all but one respect.
Andrew Godsen ran away. Did Madeleine McCann?
“You get a lot of press if your child is little, blonde and female, but it hurts just as much when you’re missing a teenage son.”
It’s a comment on the press, and on we who read the papers, a comment on how Our Maddie is mentioned in each and every missing person’s case that reaches the national press.
Says the caring hack: “So, tell me, Little Johnny is missing, and can you now relate to the McCanns better and feel their pain?”
How many people go missing?
It is estimated that 210,000 people are reported missing every year, 140,000 of them aged under 18. Of these, 100,000 have not reached their 16th birthday. The majority, 75 per cent, return home within two days, and 90 per cent are back within a month. After a year, according to Metropolitan Police figures, 99 per cent of reported runaways have been found. But not Andrew. He has vanished, seemingly without trace.
DAILY MAIL: “Greek police say girl found on Kos is not Italy’s Madeleine McCann”
A child found on the Greek island of Kos is not the missing Denise Pipitone, dubbed Italy’s Madeleine McCann.
Yes…
Greek police had seized the girl and arrested a 34-year-old Roma woman she was with following a tip off from Interpol after a family friend of the missing girl thought she had spotted her on Kos.
A gypsy! You can never trust one…
But DNA tests proved the girl was not Denise, but in fact the child of the woman arrested.
Let’s get the gypsies! Let’s fingerprint them and make them criminals. They steal children, like the Arabs…

Sad the little girl isn’t Denise. Don’t know how her Mother goes on. I would be a wreck. I know everyone makes fun of the McCanns, but their little girl is still gone too. I guess people on here think the parents killed her or had something to do with it. I just know two little girls went missing and they’ve not been found. Strangers do take kids. Not as often, but they do take them. The internet has given them ‘*alls’ to even go into someone’s home and take their child these days as in the case of Jon Benet Ramsey in America. Families harm, but strangers do too.

Karen,
I agree with you. I had just turned 40 when my little girl was born, but I think any later than mid 40’s could be unfair to the child. I certainly do not agree with IVF treatment for 60 year olds! But on the other hand, we, the parents had lived great part of our lives by then (had all the fun, etc.) before becoming a parent, and now I’m totally committed to my daughter and her needs. I don’t need the going-out, having fun, etc. etc. that younger mothers still long for when they have kids at a very young age. For me the change in lifestyle was quite easy because of what I have said before.

I’m glad you have your daughter now and I think IVF is great - the only problem I’ve noticed with some older couples who’ve had IVF or adopted or had kids late is that they sometimes find it difficult to change their lifestyle after years as a couple that can work and socialise when they want… and sometimes one changes and the other doesn’t… or they’re perfectionist and can’t cope with how messy and crappy family life can be… or they wanted the kid so much it can’t live up to their expectations…
I’ve noticed that the richer and more successful the couple are the more likely that they have those problems…
But it’s got nothing to do with IVF just habits…

I have an extreme phobia for eggs. I can’t stand the sight, smell or even the sound of the word. I don’t mind the word written or raw eggs.
By extreme I mean I shake, cry, scream and have to get away… I was very annoying in hotels and cafés when I was small…

I had a “moment” while we were having lunch. I saw a woman who looked pregnant and I began to think about when I was pregnant with Sean and Amelie. And then it hit me. (Kate then remembers a touching scene from the past.) Madeleine was coming to visit us later that evening, the look of wonder on her face, and afterwards she got in beside me in bed. She was and is so adorable—a real jewel, a real gift. And I painfully miss her.
visit us later?
check out later she was surrounded by dogs woof woof nothing changes

Well said Daisy - you sound exactly like the type of mother Madeleine deserved. Bye the way - has anyone considered the “odd number phobia”? It can be a damning thing - phobia. In extreme circumstances some will go to any lengths. Has anyone got any phobias they can talk about?

G’day All,
I see that Jo is still going on about the IVF issue in this thread. I don’t know if any of the posters here have undergone any assisted reproduction procedures, but I HAVE, and as such I believe I know more about it than Jo.
I would like to clarify once and for all for anybody who has any doubts about this procedure:
It does not involve any genetic manipulation. The success rate is only in the order of 15%. Patients are told about this before hand and counseling is offered if needed before deciding on the procedure. There is no damage to the mother. It is only hormones that are injected to stimulate ovulation. IVF babys have no more nor less ailments that a naturally conceived baby.
As for adoption vs. IVF, some countries do not allow adoption after the parents are of a certain age, hence assisted reproduction is the last option.
I have known many parents who had children through assisted reproduction procedures (IVF and GIFT). Believe me, they all went through much emotional and financial ups and downs to get their wish of having a child and give all their love to those babies. It is not easy and it sometimes takes several years to finally achieve a successful pregnancy.
In my case, IVF did not work. But I was fortunate and very, very lucky to have conceived my daughter naturally a while after that. She is my little miracle and I treasure her every day, 9 years later.
IVF is a wonderful option for some and not for others. The same as some couples decide NOT to have children, others WANT a child and are prepared to try anything possible.
The reality is that as time goes by, more babies will born with assisted reproduction. Women are having children at an older age (for various reasons) and their peak fertility is a the age of 25. After that age, it declines and at 35 or later, it becomes a lot more difficult to conceive naturally.
My apologies to M&A for getting out of topic, but I believe this subject needed some clarification from someone who has undergone this procedure.
Bye for now.
M and A
It isn’t off topic Daisy , it was under discussion yesterday.
Thankyou for telling us your side of it

Bye the way - I do know that a man CANT ACTUALLY GET PREGNANT!! I was trying to make the comparison - even a man should not produce offspring at 60 if there is the inclination to selfishness. Why is there never an outcry when a ageing man who has a much younger partner produces an offspring - take Des O’Connor for instance - isnt his kid just 1 year old and he is 76 !! But he’s OK with it and so should everyone else be - their choice, and I am sure that they are caring parents.

I just read Kate’s diary.
She refers to “Gerry’s perfomance” speaking to the media. Is that a normal word under these circonstances?
She does not talk about her feelings of guilty, by having left the children alone.
I think I understand it. She knew this diary could fall in the hands of other people.
And talking about feelings of guilt in this case must be dreadful.
Very painful to admit it.
I hope she can talk about it with a psychologist or psychiater.

Briefly back, Marie. I agree:
- Our extended life expectation is mainly due to washing hands and flushing toilets…
- A woman should not get pregnant [artificially] at 60. It’s a selfish deed …
A woman - or a man for that matter, should not get pregnant at any age if they have an inclination to be selfish and leave their children alone and neglected.
You might as well say that a pigeon should not lay 2 eggs in its flimsy nest, knowing that in most cases only one will survive - how selfish of the pigeon.
If technology is out there - then why shouldnt a woman of 60 take advantage of it - my mother is nearly 88 and is a very spritely soul, with a good sense of humour and an active mind and body. She could have a kid aged 28 if she had taken advantage of IVF at 60 - but as it stands, she is stuck with me - who at 60, feels no different in my outlook to “modern” things than I did when I had my own son 30 years ago. My granddaugher openly admits that she can talk to me about ANYTHING - even stuff she finds difficult to chat to her parents about - we go swimming, sometimes I follow her down the flume, we have picnics under an umbrella in the rain and we laugh - a lot. AND sometimes we puddle splash with my mother - So you see Chatelaine age is a state of mind and raising children is an art. If you cant do it when you are 30 then I agree that 60 is pushing it a bit - but I know several foster parents who have successfully raised kids as their own, right up to being in their 70’s - so please do not generalise

Sam if this thread really was satirical -which it hasn’t been in ages- you all would have laughed about the “wannabee dictators”. Think about that.
Don’t get me wrong, for what it’s worth I don’t think you’re one.

My reaction to your post was because you were doing precisely what you thought the others shouldn’t do, which I think is a strange way of proving your point. No more. Actually I don’t know exactly what a wannabe dictator is and if it suits you to call me that, do!!!

I agree that a woman having children at 60 is not a good idea - the cost doesn’t worry, me, it is the thought of the children growing up with a mother who might not be as flexible of mind, tolerant and au fait with things modern. Also, the likelihood she might die before they are very old is an awful thought. A very selfish thing to do.
But every young couple that uses the same technology to bring children into their life makes up for those who use it unwisely.
