Dying Staffordshire Man Told By 999: ‘Call Back If You Fall Unconscious’

AT the inquest into the death of Mark Hemmings, 41, the court heard that he had called 999 for an ambulance. The despatcher at the West Midlands Ambulance Service refused to send help. They told Mr Hemmings that his agonising gallstones should be treated in an out-of-hours surgery.

For seven minutes he pleased for an ambuilance. Three times the despatcher refused. The call was recorded so we know he was told this:

“You could try a warm bath, hot water bottle in the painful area but if you collapse, become unconscious, unresponsive, faint, or become pale, cold or clammy it’s 999.”

Sex In The Time of Ebola: Semen Acts Like A Grain Store

SEX and Ebola:

When the only way to get an often fatal disease is through contact with body fluids, it makes good sense to be very careful about sexual partners and practices. But since Ebola victims can infect others only when they are showing symptoms — high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and aches — physical intimacy probably isn’t a common way of transmitting the disease.

However, the Ebola virus can survive in semen for months after a man recovers from the infection, posing an ongoing threat to sexual partners long after he is well. At a time when a man’s bloodstream is swimming with antibodies, and he is immune to the disease, he still may be able to infect others. . . .

The magnitude of the threat is not entirely clear, however. After past Ebola outbreaks, follow-up studies of people who have recovered from Ebola found no evidence that the virus was transmitted from a recovered patient to close contacts, according to Bruce Ribner, medical director of Emory University’s Infectious Disease Unit, who led the team that successfully treated American missionaries Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol.

The War On White Men: Transgender Timothy Boatwright Is Too Male To Be Wellesley College’s Diversity Officer

THE war on white men continues: a caucasian female student who identifies as a man has been discouraged from becoming Wellesley College’s diversity officer because to have a white male in that position would perpetuate patriarchy.

Timothy Boatwright was born a girl, and checked off the “female” box when applying to the Massachusetts all-women’s school, according to an article in the New York Times. But when he got there, he introduced himself as a “masculine-of-center genderqueer” person named “Timothy” (the name he picked for himself) and asked them to use male pronouns when referring to him.

And, by all accounts, Boatwright felt welcome on campus — until the day he announced that he wanted to run for the school’s office of multicultural affairs coordinator, whose job is to promote a “culture of diversity” on campus.

But some students thought that allowing Boatwright to have the position would just perpetuate patriarchy. They were so opposed, in fact, that when the other three candidates (all women of color) dropped out, they started an anonymous Facebook campaign encouraging people not to vote at all to keep him from winning the position.

Oh, brave new world…

John Grisham Tells The Truth: Watching Child Porn Doesn’t Make You A Paedophile

PA-19391766

JOHN Grisham has rather surprised the usual people by telling the truth about child pornography. Yes, there is truly vile stuff out there and those who produce it and seek it should indeed be locked up. But that’s not quite the same as saying that everyone who looks at a pair of underage tits should be in jail:

The author of legal thrillers such as The Firm and A Time to Kill who has sold more than 275m books during his 25-year career, cited the case of a “good buddy from law school” who was caught up in a Canadian child porn sting operation a decade ago as an example of excessive sentencing.

“His drinking was out of control, and he went to a website. It was labelled ‘sixteen year old wannabee hookers or something like that’. And it said ’16-year-old girls’. So he went there. Downloaded some stuff – it was 16 year old girls who looked 30.

“He shouldn’t ’a done it. It was stupid, but it wasn’t 10-year-old boys. He didn’t touch anything. And God, a week later there was a knock on the door: ‘FBI!’ and it was sting set up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to catch people – sex offenders – and he went to prison for three years.”

Why Europe Hates Israel: It’s Envy, Stupid

Scouts parade with their Colours passing through the vast crowd at the Jamboree. Date: 03/08/1924

Scouts parade with their Colours passing through the vast crowd at the Jamboree.
Date: 03/08/1924

WHY is Europe obsessed with Israel? It’s envy:

Why Europe Is Irrational About Israel. “The flowering of Jewish national life in Israel makes the Europeans crazy. It is not simply envy: it is a terrible reminder of the vanity of European national aspirations over the centuries, of the continent’s ultimate failure as a civilization. . . . Europeans cannot live with their past. They cannot live with their present, and do not plan to have a future, for they do not bear enough children to forestall demographic ruin at the hundred-year horizon. With its high fertility, national spirit, religiosity and unabashed national self-assertion, Israel reminds the Europeans of everything that they are not. Much worse: it reminds them of what they once desired to become. The idea of Israel as well as the fact of Israel are equally intolerable to them.” over the centuries, of the continent’s ultimate failure as a civilization. . . The idea of Israel as well as the fact of Israel are equally intolerable to them.”

And that’s what  many of Israel’s critics don’t like about it. It’s not just that it’s home to Jews. They want to bash Israel for the sins of their own forefathers…

IN Hong Kong, protesters are being beaten. Well, one is. Of course, if the Chinese Red Army arrive, this will be light relief:

CCTV footage has captured what appears to be six police officers in Hong Kong assaulting a protester on a street corner. The men can be seen repeatedly kicking and punching alleged victim Ken Tsang Kin-Chiu, a member of the Civic Party. The officers have been suspended since the footage was aired on a local news channel

BENEDICT Cumberbatch is plugging his film The Imitation Game. He plays Alan Turing, the mathematician and computer scientist whose key work decrypting German codes in the second world war helped the British defeat the Nazis.

Turing died in 1954. He had been convicted of gross indecency for being gay. At the time homosexuality was illegal in the UK. He endured a chemical castration as an alternative to prison. His death was suicide, so they say.

Ched Evans: A Tale Of Love, PR And A Victim Who Wants To Forget

PA-11851240

CHED Evans, a convicted rapist and Sheffield United footballer, is dating Natasha Massey. She was dating Evans before he was jailed for five years in 2012 for raping a 19-year-old in a hotel room. She was dating him at the time of the rape.

Massey thought it a good idea to appear on ITV’s This Morning and talk things over with the great unwashed.

Evans is likely to be released this month. Shrill voices say he should never play professional football lest impressionable and doltish fans see him at work and think rape is ok.

Massey appears to be on a PR offensive. She says:

“As soon as I found out that he’d been questioned over rape, my instinct was kind of protective of Ched, and I thought I have to stand by him. So my thoughts and feelings over the cheating were put to one side and I just stepped in to help him through this terrible time.”

These Are The ‘Bizarre’ Things That Happen After You Win A Nobel Prize

Nobel Prizes winner for physics astrophysicist Saul Perlmutter displays his lifetime parking pass good for parking at the University of California at Berkeley Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, in Berkeley, Calif. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said American Perlmutter would share the 10 million kronor ($1.5 million) award with U.S.-Australian Brian Schmidt and U.S. scientist Adam Riess. Working in two separate research teams during the 1990s, Perlmutter in one and Schmidt and Riess in the other, the scientists raced to map the universe's expansion by analyzing a particular type of supernovas, or exploding stars. Nobel Prizes winner for physics astrophysicist Saul Perlmutter displays his lifetime parking pass good for parking at the University of California at Berkeley Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, in Berkeley, Calif.

IN 2011 astrophysicist Brian Schmidt won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He went on the Nobel circuit. He travelled. A lot.

‘There are a couple of bizarre things that happen. One of the things you get when you win a Nobel Prize is, well, a Nobel Prize. It’s about that big, that thick [about the size of an Olympic medal], weighs a half a pound, and it’s made of gold.”

“When I won this, my grandma, who lives in Fargo, North Dakota, wanted to see it. I was coming around so I decided I’d bring my Nobel Prize. You would think that carrying around a Nobel Prize would be uneventful, and it was uneventful, until I tried to leave Fargo with it, and went through the X-ray machine. I could see they were puzzled. It was in my laptop bag. It’s made of gold, so it absorbs all the X-rays—it’s completely black. And they had never seen anything completely black.”

“They’re like, ‘Sir, there’s something in your bag.’
I said, ‘Yes, I think it’s this box.’
They said, ‘What’s in the box?’
I said, ‘a large gold medal,’ as one does.
So they opened it up and they said, ‘What’s it made out of?’
I said, ‘gold.’
And they’re like, ‘Uhhhh. Who gave this to you?’
‘The King of Sweden.’
‘Why did he give this to you?’
‘Because I helped discover the expansion rate of the universe was accelerating.’
At which point, they were beginning to lose their sense of humor. I explained to them it was a Nobel Prize, and their main question was, ‘Why were you in Fargo?’”

The NUS Bans Free Speech And Won’t Condemn IS For Fear Of Looking Islamophobic

PA-19146393

THE National Union of Students has voted. And it will not condemn ISIS.

The Tab reports:

The bill called for the Union – which claims to represent UK students – to support unity between Muslims, condemn the bloody terror of ISIS (also known as the Islamic State), and support a boycott on people who fund the militants. But the motion offended Black Students Officer Malia Bouattia, who said: “We recognise that condemnation of ISIS appears to have become a justification for war and blatant Islamaphobia. This rhetoric exacerbates the issue at hand and in essence is a further attack on those we aim to defend.”

Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees.
