Drain the swamp: the Cold War on Islamic terror

Messages and flowers are left on Marhaba beach where 38 people were killed on Friday in a terrorist attack on June 28, 2015 in Souuse, Tunisia. Sousse beaches remain quiet following the Tunisia beach attack which left 38 dead, including at least 15 Britons. Around 1,000 tourists returned to the UK with more set to follow in the coming days

In 2013, Prime Minister David Cameron responded to Lee Rigby’s brutal murder by jihadis in London by vowing the “drain the swamp” of violent Islam. He told the Commons:

“…it is not simply enough to target and go after violent extremists after they’ve become violent. We have to drain the swamp in which they inhabit.”

The phrase was heard in 2001. Back then US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told reporters in the Pentagon:

The best way to get at the terrorist networks is to “drain the swamp they live in,” Rumsfeld said, referring to action against countries that harbor terrorist activities…

“The people who committed these acts are clearly determined to try to force the United States of America and our values to withdraw from the world or to respond by curtailing our freedoms,” he said. “If we do that the terrorists will have won.”

Basically, Americans have a choice, Rumsfeld explained. They can change the way they live, which the secretary called unacceptable, or America can change the way the terrorists live. We have chosen the latter. We intend to put them on the defensive,” Rumsfeld said. “This requires a distinctly different approach from any war that we have fought before.”

How well did that go?

ISIS seduced Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, 15, and Kadiza Sultana with a free Chelsea teddy

ISIS sex slaves

By now the faces are familiar. Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, 15, and Kadiza Sultana, 16, all from London, travelled to Istanbul on 17 February to join Islamic State. A source says the teens made it to the Turkey-Islamic State border and “Abu Ali with his men received them on the other side.”

Who he? He is the “Emir of ISIS””

“No one [dares to] speaks to him. He opens or closes the route whenever he wants. And he does whatever he wants to do. The Ali Muntar [local district] borders are in fact not under Turkey’s control – Abu Ali runs the town.”

So, farewell. Kadiza Sultana might be more nuts than fruit as her name suggests, but she’s 16 and old enough to make her own choices. The other two are close enough to walk, talk and board a flight on their own.

These girls want to bring Civilisation to it’s knees. Well, so the West’s leaders keep telling us as the harp on about the ISIS “death cult”. But unless the girls are hit by a bomb dropped from high, high in the skies, if they face any enemy at all it will be the Kurds, on whose shoulders saving the West from barbarism rests. No pressure.

Mary Wakefield wonders what made three teenage girls do it?

Let your outrage subside and it’s pitifully easy to see what draws these idiots to Islamism. It’s not evil, or any inherent flaw, but just a simple set of ordinary influences which combine to create catastrophe.

For a child to choose religious orthodoxy may seem sinister — aren’t teens supposed to want freedom? — but look again and it’s just the usual rebellion against a parent. These girls and others like them are usually second or third-generation Brits. Their parents have assimilated, hoped their children would follow suit, so they rebel by becoming Islamists. The Dutch academic Ian Buruma spotted the trend a decade ago in a book investigating the assassination (by an Islamist) of the film-maker Theo van Gogh. He said: ‘The main perpetrators of violence in the name of religion in Europe are not, on the whole, the original guest workers or refugees… it is their children born in Europe who are vulnerable to a modern, violent, revolutionary creed.’

The more you tell the kids not to do it, the more they rebel. So:

Ban the veil. ‘Well, screw you, I’ll wear the veil.’

Don’t stay up to late listening to jihadi anti-music. ‘Sod you, dadd-io, I’ll stay up all night shagging a jihadi.’

Watch out for paedophiles. ‘Ha! I’m gonna marry a middle-aged man.’

Hurry home. ‘Ha. I’m off. So long, losers. See you in Hell.’

Most normal 15-year-old girls are popping with righteous indignation, desperately seeking a cause. British schoolgirls of a secular sort find their vocation defending seal pups and abandoned dogs. But for a Muslim schoolgirl, already Islamo-curious, there’s a cause waiting in the wings — and it’s a cause that understands their language.

Isis may seem like bullies to us, but in the skewed light of a smartphone they appear as underdogs, a revolutionary brave brigade taking on the big bad West. Teens don’t sit and watch the news at ten, they pick it up piecemeal on social media. All three of the recent runaways followed countless jihadis online. On Twitter and Instagram, in their own carefully curated feeds, these no-hoper Isis yobs seem not only justified but cool, almost boyband. One Direction — east.

As the three turn their back on enlightenment, feminism, equality, tolerance, freedom, liberty, music and a decent salt beef sandwhich, we saw one of the girl’s fathers. He was holding a teddy on the news. His little girl had left the snuggles and the dolls to watch public executions, shag armed speed-freaks on demand and avoid offending any of the laws of that land lest she be burned alive in a cage.

Then we noticed that the teddy was wearing a Chelsea kit.

Screen shot 2015-02-26 at 17.40.06

Had Chelsea radicalised the teenage girls? Because, you know that all football fans are suspected racists, possibly Nazis? Can we blame Chelsea? Can we blame anyone? The girls have been led astray. They don’t know what they’re doing. They are easily impressionable. Sure, they are turned on by stonings, public beatings, rape, murdering homosexuals and not have to worry if stating a desire to see all Jews killed is misinterpreted as anti-Zionism and some Western liberal’s blather about Israel. Maybe they missed all those videos and news bulletins about the rape, racism and the murder? They heard that you get a free teddy and that Chelsea was the official national team.

Grace Dent:

…there’s a strong case to be made that fleeing abroad in search of Isis is simply a severe case of teen rebellion. Much, in fact, like the time, aged 15, when I pierced my nose and dyed my hair a sort of toxic cyan shade, imagining myself to look like a sexy mermaid, like Kate from The B52s, but instead resembling the Cookie Monster. I was a complete tit for almost all of the 1980s. The Nineties and Noughties were only marginally better. But still, I am lost for ideas on how we greet young teen rebels who hope to return here after mixing with Isis…

I’d go as far as to say you shouldn’t be allowed back into the country ever, when surely there are dozens of other bloodier, more depressing places that suit your lifestyle choice better. However, I’ve asked my liberal friends what we should do and they all wring their hands and say after some mumbling, “Nothing.” So give me a call when you’re bored with all the stoning, crucifying and beheading. I’ll meet you at Heathrow Arrivals with your teddy.

Which we will then tear limb from limb…

From #IS To #Ferguson: Drugged Jihadis Offer To Kill For Justice And Muslim Converts In America

Ferguson is burning. And on the web, a Islamic State jihadi makes the poepls burning and marching for justice an offer:

Accept islam & give bayah to abu bakr al baghdadi & then we will send u soldiers that dont sleep !

Convert to militant, murderous Islam and the Islamic State will ride into Ferguson to murder the Christians, Jews, Hindus and Buddhsits and ban your sister and mum from going out alone.

Sure one white cop killed an unarmed black man, but he enver tried hard enough. With IS, lots of armed Muslims will kill millions of unarmed people. Think big, Ferguson!  Freedom is yours to grasp!

Crisis over, America, you’ve just be raffirmed.

Murder In Canada: Islam And Dead Soldiers Race For Victimhood

Mark Steyn writes on murder and mayhem Canada.

There have been two recent incidents.

One: The NY Times:

The shootings in the heart of the normally placid Canadian capital came two days after two members of the Canadian armed forces were injured in a hit-and-run crash in a small Quebec city that the authorities considered an act of terrorism.

The Truth About Jihadi Brides In Islamic State

facebook jihad

HOW did you become a jihadi’s bride? The Sun gives its readers an insight:

AN undercover reporter for The Sun was recruited to become a bride for a British fighter waging war in Syria for terror group Islamic State. The journalist, posing as an unhappy London schoolgirl keen to join IS, was allocated a “husband” during online chats with matchmaker Zahra Halane — one of the Terror Twins who left their Manchester home for the war-torn country three months ago.

We hear from Coverntry’s own Rashed Amani, 19, who told the Sun’s blagger:

“I’d love to pick you up as soon as u come.”

It’s Finbarr Saunders.

He’s further quoted:

“I have fought and in fighting u won’t always tell if it’s you who shot them or someone else but more usually we shoot and its Allah the great kills you see.”

Eh? English is his first language.

Not eveyone is seduced by the chance to shag a priapic jihadi to death:

“I just can’t understand why she’d want to go to Syria,” explains Aisha, also 20, and from Slough. The youngest daughter of parents originally from Kashmir, she’s reading Applied Social Sciences at Goldsmith’s. “The UK has given us so much in terms of education, human rights, equality. Why go from that to Syria where, as a woman, she will face so many restrictions? She won’t even be able to go out on her own to the corner shop.”

On Crikey (Aus), we read:

American writer and psychologist Phyllis Chesler speculates that these women have chosen “unfreedom” in response to a surfeit of choices offered to them in the West. Over on the Quadrant blog, economist Peter Smith writes that Amira Kharroum’s story illustrates that the “moderate Muslims” extolled by multiculturalists are a myth.

Unfreedom? It’s either positive freedom (freedom to do) or negative freedom (freedom from). Unfreedom sounds lot like bondage.

Are women really travelling in droves to meet a dreamy jihadi?

The BBC:

When Tunisia’s authorities announced that a stream of young women had been leaving their homes to provide sexual services to Islamist militants in Tunisia and Syria, the statement was greeted with both shock and scepticism. The BBC’s Ahmed Maher went to Tunisia to investigate the reports…

The story is rooted in the Jebel ech Chaambi (Chaambi mountains) area of western central Tunisia, on the border with Algeria… The authorities say they have arrested a number of girls and women in cities around Chaambi, whom they accuse of having sex with battle-weary militants as part of a campaign to improve morale.

We meet the mothr of one women who allegedly services jihadis:

“She has never been to the Chaambi mountains. These are false accusations. She was religious and went to mosque,” the mother told me. She requested anonymity because “this is a sensitive issue in our conservative city.” She wore the full-body veil – we say it’s a sign of chastity, not extremism.”

What’s beneath the veil?

Interior Minister Lotfi bin Jido told the Beeb:

“Tunisian girls are swapped between 20, 30, and 100 rebels and they come back bearing the fruit of sexual contacts in the name of sexual jihad and we are silent doing nothing and standing idle.”

Radio broadcaster Zuhir Eljiis believes the aim is to suggest that the ruling Islamist Enhada party is turning a blind eye to extremism. “The interior minister has not come up with hard evidence. He gave no statistics,” he said. “He’s caused controversy, giving the impression this is a big issue. He is known for his political independence, but I think he might have been caught in a political game between rival parties.”

Is it just a good story?

Another prominent Muslim scholar in Tunisia, Sheikh Fareed Elbaji, told the BBC he personally knew families who had discovered that their daughters had gone to Chaambi and Syria to offer sex in support of the militants, apparently in obedience to fatwas or religious edicts issued on the battlefields of Syria.

And the conclusion?

In largely secular and liberal Tunisia, the idea of sexual jihad comes as a shock. Many dismiss it as a politically motivated hoax. But others, already alarmed by growing extremism in the country, say it cannot be so easily ruled out.

He isn’t sure.

The Daily Mail is sure:

An ever-growing band of young women have left their families in Britain to join the jihadi cause in Syria. Researchers have identified six more such women through their online accounts – and warn this could be the tip of the iceberg.

But we meet only a few:

Academics at King’s College in London said they have seen ‘a big uptake’ in the number of UK women going to Syria. Among them are Salma and Zahra Halane, 16, twins from Chorlton, Manchester, and mother-of-one Khadijah Dare, 22, who is married to a Swedish jihadist. Privately educated radiography student Aqsa Mahmood, 20, from Glasgow, made headline news this week after her sobbing middle-class parents begged her to return.

Can it be that many more young women have left these shores for IS and no-one’s noticed?

The Telegraph looks:

Refugees, women still living under its rule and men who have escaped from its prisons have told Telegraph of the life under the shadow of the extremist group’s black flag. One woman, whose name the Telegraph knows but is withholding, described how she went to the recruiting office of an all-women jihad unit, formed from the women who have flocked to Syria from Europe and elsewhere to serve the cause, some with their children…

“I went inside their headquarters, which used to be the Christian church,” she said. “I asked what the conditions were to join. They said you have to be 18-25, unmarried, and you would earn 25,000 Syrian pounds. But if you joined you had the opportunity to marry one of the foreign fighters. However, they make sure you are a real jihadist.”

What’s the widow’s pension look like?

She said that outside she met four new recruits, three from Tunisia, and one Frenchwoman, who told her she was divorced and had brought her 12-year-old daughter and four younger sons to Syria to join the militants… But the Raqqa woman and other activists from the town say that the imbalance of the sexes means ISIS has begun to “recruit” brides from local schools and colleges.

Among those who resisted, they say, was a 21-year-old student called Fatima Abdullah from a tribal area outside the city, whose brother had joined ISIS and persuaded their father to hand her over for marriage to a Tunisian. She refused, and when her family insisted, killed herself with rat poison. The story was confirmed by other activists from the town.

Are the women simply servants?

Eight months ago, Umm Haritha, a 20-year-old woman from Canada, made her way to Turkey against her parents’ wishes with a half-empty suitcase and $1,500.

Within a week she was in Syria, and a few weeks later she was married to Abu Ibrahim al-Suedi, a 26-year-old Palestinian from Sweden fighting for Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the Sunni jihadist group battling the Syrian regime.

It is not clear whether Umm Haritha’s marriage to Abu Ibrahim was arranged before her travel to Syria. Regardless, it only lasted five months.

On May 5, Abu Ibrahim, whose real name is Taha Shade, was in a car en route to a meeting in Deir ez-Zor with members of rival faction Jabhat al-Nusra. What was meant to be a gathering to finalize a peace treaty between ISIS and al-Nusra turned deadly when an al-Nusra fighter on a motorbike sped up to Shade’s car and detonated his explosive belt.

At the time, Shade was wearing his own explosive belt, which also went off and blew him to pieces.

Two days later, Umm Haritha tweeted about her husband’s death, calling on “Allah” to “destroy those who backstabbed the brothers and resurrect Abu Ibrahim with noor [light] from every piece of his body.”

It’s a bloody puzzle – literally:

The Sunday Times says not:

A 15-YEAR-OLD girl from Bristol who is feared to have travelled overseas to become a jihadist bride may have been recruited by a group of British women who act as religious police for Isis terrorists in Syria. Detectives are investigating postings on social media which suggest that Yusra Hussien was communicating with the women just weeks before she and a 17-year-old friend from London fled the UK.

One message stated: “I yearn to be the wife of a mujahid [holy warrior] and support him and khilafa [Islamic caliphate] all the way.”

Yusra is thought to be the youngest Briton to have joined Isis, also known as Islamic State. Friends have claimed she was radicalised online and recently managed to fly to Turkey, which borders Syria, while her Somalia-born parents thought she was at school.

As many as 70 women and girls are among the 500-plus British Muslims who have travelled to the Middle East for jihad. They include a group which has joined a feared all-female religious police force called the al-Khanssaa brigade in Raqqa, the de facto capital of the self-declared Isis caliphate.

Breitbart, however, is having none of it.

The most barbaric bunch of blood-thirsty misogynists this side of Genghis Khan are yearning for western “brides”—and the “brides,” who will be no more than sex and reproductive slaves, are coming, via an internet campaign, to service ISIS’s male Jihadis in the Caliphate in formation in Syria and Iraq. There is a “marriage bureau” in the northern Syrian town of Al Bab for Western women in a marrying state of mind.

She adds, rather oddly:

The would-be “brides” are given point-by-point guidance on what to expect.” What is coming their way is far darker than Fifty Shades of Grey.

Excited much? A little bit turned on?

Some Jihad Janes are mentally ill and, like Maryam Jameelah (aka Margaret Marcus of Larchmont), may find that becoming ardent spokeswomen for Maulana Abul Ala Mawdudi’s Islamist ideology helps them solve the profound limitations of mental illness.

Some Jihad Janes may have been sexually and physically traumatized by their Western families and seek to escape the country or the culture that allowed this to happen. They may not know that they are jumping from the proverbial fire pan into the fire itself.

The writer seems litle short on face and long on fantasy:

Young, impressionable, naïve, and dreamy girls and women may yearn for a Grand “Arabian Nights” kind of Adventure. I doubt they have ever read the Arabian Nights, which is filled with the most bestial acts imaginable, including that of be-heading virgin brides at dawn, after the marriage has been consummated.

Can you be a virgin after you’ve had sex?

Dr Phyllis Chesler goes on:

She may be expected to undergo female genital mutilation so that she will never be able to experience sexual pleasure; every sexual interaction will be agonizing as will each and every experience of giving birth (Or of urinating, etc.).

Yeah. Maybe. Or maybe not.

The BBC:

The notion of “jihadi brides” travelling to Syria to marry IS fighters has gained currency in recent reports in the western media.

Families in France whose daughters have gone to Syria have received phone calls from Syrian men asking for their daughters’ hands in marriage, and the online accounts of male fighters seem bombarded by requests from women wanting to be their wives.

Mia Bloom from the Center for Terrorism and Security Studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell provocatively argued that women are seen as little more than “baby factories” in the desire to populate the new “purist” Islamic state.

However this does not mean the young women simply want to find a husband. The “jihadi bride” concept is only part of the story.

There is another side to their decision to travel. Women are joining IS because it provides a new utopian politics – participating in jihad and being part of the creation of a new Islamic state…

There are images of women carrying AK47’s, wearing a suicide belt and holding a severed head. But they are also cooking, making Nutella pancakes, doing housework, meeting each other for coffee, and being mothers and carers.

It is this combination of violence and domesticity that many find jarring. A female Malaysian medic, now known as Umm al-Baraa, tweeted in January: “Stethoscope around my neck and kalash on my shoulder. Martyrdom is my highest dream”.

This is a video of life in IS:

It might be that – and this is terrifying – many women are make a free and informed choice to live in IS.

Britain’s Jihadis Are Agents Of The British Government – Others Just Want To Come Home

The mother of a missing Lebanese soldier who was kidnapped by Islamic State militants, shouts slogans against the Lebanese cabinet during a demonstration to demand action to secure the captives’ release, in front the Lebanese government building, in downtown Beirut, Lebanon, on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014. Lebanon’s government is forming a crisis committee to handle the case of some two dozen members of the security forces held captive by Syrian militants amid escalating criticism over its response to the hostage affair.

THE Times says: “Dozens of British jihadists have become so disillusioned with fighting in Syria that they have contacted the UK begging to come home.”

Begging to come home. Really?

One jihadist, claiming to represent 30 Britons, approached an intermediary to complain of growing despondency among the men in his group. They had gone to fight against President Assad’s regime but were instead engaged primarily in fierce combat with rival rebel groups, he said. The man, who cannot be named, contacted researchers from the International Centre for Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR) at King’s College London via social media in the past two weeks. He effectively sought amnesty, saying that the group feared long prison terms but would be willing to enrol on a deradicalisation programme and submit to surveillance.

And be willing, surely, to grass up his former comrades.

Is this true? Or is it a spot of cunning, an attempt to make the jihadis distrust the BRitish contingent?

What is the International Centre for Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence?

ICSR’s mission is to bring together knowledge and leadership. Producing first class, rigorous research, our aim is to educate the public and help policymakers and practitioners find more intelligent solutions in dealing with radicalisation and political violence.

Shiraz Maher is a Senior Research Fellow:

Shiraz Maher is a Senior Research Fellow and is currently coordinating the Centre’s research on the Syrian and Iraqi conflicts. He also researches the development of Salafi-Jihadi ideology, and jihadist organisations in the broader Middle East. As a result of this research he has been invited to give evidence before three parliamentary committees.

Maher is also an adjunct at Johns Hopkins University where he teaches a course on radicalisation (along with Peter Neumann), and was a visiting lecturer at Washington College during the Spring Semester of 2012.

He was also awarded the first Konrad Adenauer Foundation Fellowship in Energy Security (2012-2013) based at the European Centre for Energy and Resource Security (EUCERS) where he explored the impact of political unrest in the Middle East on energy markets.

Maher has previously worked for Policy Exchange, writing on Security and Foreign Policy. He published a series of influential studies there which attracted widespread attention across government. His report on reforming the government’s counter-terrorism strategy was described by Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education, as ‘brilliant’, while Lord Guthrie of Craigiebank, former Chief of the Defence Staff, called it ‘remarkable’.

But lest you think the outfit takes a side, it states:

ICSR is independent and non-partisan. All our work is published. We undertake no classified research for governments or international organisations.

The Times adds:

The militants are from a group affiliated with Islamic State, the terrorist network that beheaded two American journalists and is threatening to murder the British aid worker David Haines… More than 500 British citizens are believed to have travelled to the region since 2011, with most joining Isis, raising fears that they will return radicalised and trained to carry out terrorist attacks in the UK.

The British man told researchers: “We came to fight the regime and instead we are involved in gang warfare. It’s not what we came for but if we go back [to Britain] we will go to jail.
“Right now we are being forced to fight — what option do we have?”

Soldier discovers life in the military not all he thought it’d be. Shocker!

Shiraz Maher, who runs a research unit at ICSR that is in intermittent contact with about 50 British jihadists, said that the man regretted being involved in the conflict. The man said that he was among a group of fighters, most of them in their early twenties, “a good chunk of whom” were depressed and disillusioned, Mr Maher added.

ISIS: Khaled Sharrouf And His Son’s Decapitated Head Toy

bothhands (1)

THIS is a picture of Khaled Sharrouf’s son, a child raised in the suburbs of Sydney, struggling with both arms to hold up the decapitated head of a slain Syrian soldier.

In a conflict awash with gruesome images, this single photograph – posted on Twitter by a proud father with the words “Thats my boy!” – may come to symbolise the savagery that has become the hallmark of the Islamic State and the depravity of its army of foreign fighters.

Khaled Sharrouf

Dad is part of a touring Autralian party:

Australian jihadists fighting with the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham are carrying out massacres of captured Iraqi prisoners and participating in some of the most gruesome war crimes committed during the two-week-old Iraq insurgency.

Convicted terrorist Khaled Sharrouf is among a handful of Australian jihadists believed to have carried out bloody, battlefield executions, in what amounts to a serious escalation of Australian involvement in the Iraq-Syria conflict.

Before his conviction and journey to the Middle Ages – it’s belived he travelled on his brother’s passport – Sharrouf lived on disability benefit.

As Tim Blair notes:

Let’s assume, for the sake of it, that ISIS (Impaired and Subsidised Islamic Soldiers) achieves its aim of overthrowing governments in Iraq and Syria. What happens next? Well, nothing. Nothing at all. These blokes can’t work, and they’ve got the official medical documents to prove it…Sure, they’re great at putting bullets in the back of captured Iraqi soldiers’ heads. But they clearly can’t find any laborers to bury the bodies.

He might not be joking…

PS – In the UK that decaptiated Soldier would be passed for for work.

Biased BBC Says Muslim Brotherhood Are No Jihadis: Well, Not All Of Them Are

EGYPT In Chaos (Photos): The BBC has 50 journalists in Egypt. They also have Simpson and Bowen talking to other BBC journalists while the cameras roll. All agree that the Muslim Brotherhood is a conservative organisation. (Many Egyptians disagree.)

Says Jeremy Bowen on the BBC – and this the same Bowen who said of the Islamists that want to annihilate Israel and every Jew in it: “Hamas is a less conventional organisation”:

The country’s only properly organised mass political movement outside the ruling party is the Muslim Brotherhood, and it would do very well in any free election.

Unlike the jihadis, it does not believe it is at war with the West. It is conservative, moderate and non-violent. But it is highly critical of Western policy in the Middle East.

The Syrian foreign ministry says eight civilians were killed in the attack.

Jihad Makdissi says this is an outrageous crime and an act of aggression. The BBC reports the matter but makes no mention to the irony that the man complaining of aggression is called Jihad.
