Toddler falls on pencil that pierces her brain (X-Ray)
WREN Bowell is 2. At her home in Peasedown St John, Somerset, she was racing to show her parents a picture she had just drawn. She tripped over a stair gate. The pencil she was holding – wince now – entered her eye. The pencil passed though her skull and went 1 1/2in into the frontal lobe of her brain.
Wisely, her parents did not fiddle with the pencil. They called 999. After an operation lasting four hours at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, Wren is recovered.

Woman gets hand trapped in pool table
WE join the action in the U-31 Bar and Cocktail Lounge on University Avenue at 31st Street, San Diego, where a 22-year-old woman who got her hand stuck inside a pool table. Sharon Rangel, a bartender, provides the voiceover:

Falling woman’s life saved when dress snags on 7th floor awning (video)
THE woman, 74, was yelliing at street musicians when she fell from her 8th floor balcony in Mariupol, Ukraine. She did not die. Her dress caught on an awning on the 7th floor. Woman gets trapped in sewer retrieving dropped mobile phone
TO Jackson, Mississippi, where Lori McElroy has dropped her mobile phone down the sewer. She has gotten stuck truying to retrieve it. The jaws of life are summoned. Before too long, McElroy is free.
She tells local media:
“I was on the phone talking with somebody and then I dropped the phone in the sewer. “There wasn’t no water in it, so I figured I could go down there and get it. Then I got stuck and couldn’t get out.”
“The man got the top out and they still couldn’t get me out. And then they had to call the fire department and the ambulance. I feel wonderful that I am out, but it was a stupid mistake. It’s better to just go buy another phone instead of having to go through that.”

Car crash victim died from poisoned airbag
RONALD Smith, 59, died in a road traffic accident. The crash did not kill him. The airbag in his Vauxhall Insignia did. The crash caused a window to break. The glass punctured the airbag. Mr Smith breathed in the airbag’s fumes and died.
At South Tyneside Coroner Terence Carney, his widow, June Smith, says:
“I knew from the very beginning that it was the airbag. I just knew. It’s just not fair that you have to lose someone because of something that is meant to save a life.”

Skydiver dies celebrating new parachute training company with parachute jump
ROBERT Ranieri III, 29, has ded in a sky diving accident over Lake Tahoe in California. Ranieri’s last dive was incident as a celebration of his new business – teaching people how to operate parachutes.
Payment must be made in full before Module 1.

California: 101-year-old jogging smoker killed by 91-year-old drag racer
SHOULD the very aged be able to drive? Otto Jensen was killed by a car on Olive Avenue, Burbank, Calif. Otto was 101. The driver, Mary Beaumont, is 91. A friend of Otto’s tells the AP: “I believe the man could have gone to 105, at least.”
Otto smoked two cigars a day and loved the ladies.

Woman trapped in deckchair for two days
CHECK your summer chairs and loungers, readers. An 84-year-old woman from Karlskrona, Sweden, fell through the seat on her balcony deck chair and remained stuck in the frame for two days. She was discovered when neighbours spotted that newspapers had not been taken indoors and she’d not attended church.
With the church and newspaper industries both faltering, rebranding them as alarm systems can only help stop the slide.

THE man trapped on the escalator at Nottingham’s West End Arcade has lost a toe.
One eyewitness, shop owner David Rose, says:

Man accidentally nails hand to roof – filming starts on 127 Hours Sequel
MIGHT this be the sequel to 127 Hours, the film in which a man slices off his trapped hand in a successful bid to save the rest of his body? In this film, a man has nailed his little finger to the roof of a Coconut Grove home.
Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Iggy Carroll narrates:
“It was that one finger on his left hand where the nail went through and into the wood. And we wasn’t able to free himself, so that’s when they called 911.”

Bristol bus driver used bus as weapon to injure cyclist – video
GAVIN Hill, a 29-year-old bus driver from Bristol, has been convicted of using the bus “as a weapon” against cyclist Philip Mead.
Mead had complained that Hill had gotten too close to him. Outside Bristol Magistrates’ Court, Hill overtook Mead and veered into him. Mead’s leg broke.
Hill has been sentenced to 17 months prison.

Erin Langworthy falls 111m into Zambezi River when bungee snaps
ERIN Langworthy fell 111m into the Zambezi River when the cord on her bungee snapped 25m from the water.
Erin Langworthy was on holiday from Australia. On December 31 she thought it a good idea to jump off a platform above the crocodile-infested Zambezi Rive and bounce up and down in a strip of elastic.
Says Erin:
“It felt like I had been slapped all over.”
In the water, the cord became snagged on rocks:
“I actually had to swim down to yank the bungee cord out of what it was caught in… All the water I inhaled meant I couldn’t breathe and I made them [the ‘rescuers’] roll me on to my side and that’s when I started coughing up water and blood.”

Drunk Driver Slams Car Into Mobile Breath Alcohol Testing Lab
DOUGLAS Shane Southard, 21, of Hickory, North Carolina, is accused of being drunk when he drove his red 1989 Chevrolet Camaro into a mobile Breath Alcohol Testing lab at a DWI checkpoint.
Says Maj. Kevin Yarborough of the Newton Police Department:
“In the officer’s opinion,alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.”

Man Aims At Squirrel Climbing Up Leg: Shoots Own Foot
SELF-Inflicted wound of The Day: Ethan Bennett, 36, has told the Benton County sheriff’s deputies that when he wwent to shoot the squirrel climbing up his leg, he missed and shot himself in the foot.
Says Capt. Greg Ridler: “The squirrel scared him.”

Police Find Man Trapped In Hollow Tree Trunk (Photos)
TO Laguna Hills, California, where a man is stuck inside the hollow trunk of a tree. The hole leads about five feet underground. When police arrive, all they can see are the man’s head and arms.
The fire brigade is called. It takes 90 minutes to cut the man free.
Says Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion of the Orange County Fire Authority. “Why he’s in a tree, I have no idea.”

Fire Crew Cut Durham Man Free From Toilet Seat
TO Tudhoe, County Durham, where the fire brigade is freeing a 26-year-old man from a toilet seat. The man and his freinds, who had been drinking, wanted to see what things they could fit over their heads. So. He put a toilet seat over his head and it became stuck about his torso.
After two hours to stugglign to free himself, the emergency services were called. The reasons of efficint and comedy value, the brigade invited the man to pop along to the station.
Says one of the crew, manager Michael Burden:
“The man rang us first to see if we could help and he came with his girlfriend and a friend. He looked rather flushed when he arrived but relieved when we managed to get the toilet seat off him. He had been drinking and had been playing a game to see what items could fit over his head. He managed to do just that with the toilet seat, but it got stuck around his body. He was a bit worse for wear, but we used our cutting equipment to get it off. After his release he was so pleased he gave one of our firemen a big kiss. He took the loo seat home with him as a memento.”

Motorcyclist Breaks Speed Limit Without His Bike
TO Switzerland, where a 38-year-old motorcyclist has been caught speeding without a motorbike, having slid passed the speed camera at 66mph.
The incident occurred on October 2, 2011, beetween Cibourg and La Chaux-de-fonds, close to Bern and the French border. Anorak sympathises with the driver: the only way to enter Switzelrand is while being chased by less neutral Nazis; the only way to leave is either in a wooden box or, as we now know, by the seat of your pants.

Plane Crashes Into Ferris Wheel: Photos Of Envy
TO Old Bar, Australia, where an ultra-light Cheetah S200 plane carrying two men has crashed into a Ferris wheel. A nine-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were trapped in a carriage at the top of the wheel. Children and thrill-seekers on the ground looked on with unbridled envy.

Woman Dies After Injecting Her Face With Hot Beef Fat
TO Homewood, Chicago, where Janet Hardt, 63, is dead. Police says she died as a result of injecting hot beef fat into her face.
It is thought that he had enacted this procedure many times before, injecting the hot beef fat into her mouth and chin. A source tells the Chicago Sun Times that Hardt complained of a burning sensation. She went to the hospital. She later died.

127 Hours Sequel: Trapped John Hutt Cuts Off All His Toes
THE sequel to 127 Hours is in the pipeline. It stars semi-retired logger John Hutt, 61. While working alone in the remote San Miguel County the morning of Aug. 19, his foot became caught in six tons of machinery.
He picked up his penknife (3 inches – Trapper Old Timer pocketknife) and cut off all his toes.
He then drove to a parking lot near the Ridgway Dam and awaited the ambulance that would take him to the Montrose Memorial Hospital.

Crash Survivor Killed By Drunk Driver On Pilgrimage To Virgin Of Miracles
SYMPATHIES are with the Spanish man killed by a drunk driver north of Ordes. The victim and his two aunts- also killed in he accident – were on a pilgrimage to thank the “Virgin of Miracles” for his survival in a road crash.
Says a spokesman for the Ordes mayor:
“He survived a road accident last year and they were going to thank the ‘Virgin of Miracles’ of Caion. He did not even manage to walk one kilometre and was still in Ordes.”

Hull Man Sues For Accident That Saw Pressurised Hose Got Up His Anus
GARETH Durrant, 26, inflated when a compressed air hose went up his bum.
The air pressure was 300lbs per square inch
He’s at Hull County Court suing Willerby Holiday Homes for compensation.
Mr Durrant was working on the production line, where pressurised air lines hang from the ceiling waiting to be connected to power tools. He was dressed in shorts. And one of the lines went into his bottom.
