WHEN is a war not a war? That question to Obama, who calls the assault on ISIS an “effort”. Did he ever read The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, the fictional diary of a teenager?

One entry reads:

The nation has been told that Britain and Argentina are not at war, we are at conflict.

Dan Froomkin:

This was not going to be a huge deal, he indicated. He called it an “effort,” not a war, and stressed that “this effort will be different from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It will not involve American combat troops fighting on foreign soil.” There was no talk of shock and awe; what Obama had in mind was a ”counterterrorism campaign” that “will be waged through a steady, relentless effort.” And Obama’s lack of any specificity regarding the scale of the effort, the timing, goals for partner participation, or any kind of metrics for success was either cover for him not really having a viable plan — or a brilliant rhetorical strategy to keep open the option of ratcheting everything back once the hysteria passes. Or both.

Birmingham’s Racist Bike Lanes Will Emancipate Women

bikes

BIRMINGHAM’S bicycle lands are racist. The Birmingham Mail reports on the city’s Cycle City project, “which hopes to get motorists to ditch their cars, will be backed by £6.3 million from the council, as well as a £17 million Department for Transport grant.”

Good for the environment. Good for your health. Good for local business that can be visited by shoppers who can stop without fear of having their cars slapped with massive fines.

So. Time to heard from Coun Deirdre Alden (Con, Edgbaston):

“The vast majority of cyclists on our roads are young, white men… most elderly people are not going to cycle, and it would be dangerous for them to start on our streets now… women of any ethnic group who wish to wear modest clothing, and I count myself in that category, are not going to cycle. It is a discriminatory form of transport”.

Transfer Balls: Arsenal Get Two-For-Cesc Deal In Munir El Haddadi and Sergi Samper

TRANSFER Balls: Arsenal are linked by Spanish newspaper SPORT to Barcelona’s Munir El Haddadi and Sergi Samper.

Both players sit on contracts with €12million release clauses. So. If Arsene Wenger acts now he can get them both for less than they could be worth when they are fully grown stars.

Arsenal fans may well wonder who these players are. Well, as ever, the lazier elements of the media bill both as versions of what has gone before.

The Indy hails the – yep – new Cesc Fabregas!

Ashya King: Jehovah’s Witnesses Made Them Do It

ASHYA King: a look at reporting on the desperately ill five-year-old boy. Writing in the Independent, Joan Smith sticks the knife in:

When the Kings first removed Ashya from hospital, it was widely reported that the family were Jehovah’s Witnesses. Southampton General Hospital denies releasing this information to the media, and it does not seem to have had any bearing on Ashya’s treatment to date. But the fact that his parents belong to a millennial religious cult – members believe that the end of the world is imminent and only 144,000 human beings will be saved – suggests that they might not be entirely open to rational argument. Maybe that is why they have not taken up an extraordinary offer from the Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, to fly an oncologist to Spain to reassure them about the treatment Ashya would receive in the UK.

A FEW thoughts on domestic violence from Jezebel, revisited in light of the Ray Rice story:

“According to a study of relationships that engage in nonreciprocal violence, a whopping 70% are perpetrated by women. So basically that means that girls are beating up their BFs and husbands and the dudes aren’t fighting back. With Amy Winehouse busting open a can of whupass on her husband last week, we decided to conduct an informal survey of the Jezebels to see who’s gotten violent with their men. After reviewing the answers, let’s just say that it’d be wise to never ever fuck with us.”

Witchcraft Eradicator Sues British Humanist Association For Half A Billion Dollars

witches

THE British Humanist Association has a court case looming:

The British Humanist Association (BHA) and Witchcraft and Human Rights Information Network (WHRIN) are being sued by the wealthy evangelical preacher and ‘witch hunter’ Helen Ukpabio who has dubbed herself a ‘Lady Apostle’. Mrs Ukpabio claims to have expertise in identifying children and adults who are possessed with witchcraft spirits and in how they can be ‘delivered’ from those spirits. Her lawyers have informed the BHA and WHRIN that she is launching a legal case against them due to their criticism of her teachings and methods.

…Her legal case against the BHA is based on Mrs Ukpabio’s stating that she wrote that a child ‘under the age of two’ who is ‘possessed with black, red and vampire witchcraft spirits’ can be identified by features such as s/he ‘screams at night, cries, is always feverish, suddenly deteriorates in health, puts up an attitude of fear, and may not feed very well.’ Her teachings are to the effect that babies under the age of two who exhibit signs of illness or standard, entirely normal childhood behaviour (such as crying, not feeding well, screaming at night, having a fever) may be possessed by vampire witchcraft spirits. She also teaches that children who stamp their feet may be ‘trying to make signs… to communicate with gnomes, the witchcraft spirit in charge of the earth.’ Ukpabio claims that the BHA misrepresented her by saying that she ascribed these symptoms to Satanic possession and hence has damaged her reputation and livelihood to the sum of half a billion pounds.

Ashya King: Now He’s ‘Our Ashya’ Brett and Naghemeh King Are No Longer Jehovah’s Witnesses

PA-20804411 (1)

ONCE upon a time, cancer-striken five-year-old Ashya King had been placed in great peril by his Jehovah Witness parents Brett and Naghemeh King. Media piled in on the oddball Kings, who had done wrong in removing their son from NHS care and taking him to Spain. One paper was at pains to paint the Kings as weirdos. At every turn they were billed a Jehovah’s Witnesses. This was one of the reasons they had defied common sense and the British way to flee the country.

The_Sun_30_8_2014

They were different. And they were wrong.

The good cops were “battling” to find the boy, rescue him from the oddball parents who let their chidlren play in a swimming pool. The Mirror reported:

The five-year-old has a deadly brain tumour and experts have warned he needs specialised care immediately. British officers have issued European arrest warrants for “neglect” against Ashya’s Jehovah’s Witness parents Brett, 51, and Naghmeh, 45. They took him from his hospital ward and fled on Thursday.

The BBC on Jeremy Forrest:

The prosecution said Forrest, 30, of Petts Wood, south-east London, had groomed the pupil at Bishop Bell CofE School in Eastbourne where he taught…

The maths teacher was labelled a “paedophile” by the prosecution, who said he “groomed” the vulnerable teenager and his actions were a gross breach of trust.

Russian TV Broadcasts Video Game Fan Art As An Example of WWI US Propaganda

deviant art

THE  Moscow Times says Russia’s state TV network Channel One broadcast the above poster as an example of WWI US propaganda. You might know it better as fan art for the video game Team Fortress 2.

The Moscow Times:

A voiceover claimed the painting had been created by a U.S. organization called the Committee on Public Information, which allegedly created propaganda posters of “German monsters” to get the message across that “Germans are the devil incarnate…”

The poster was actually created by a Finnish artist who goes by the nickname TankTaur, TJournal reported. It was published on the DeviantArt website in 2009 and can still be found there.

You can see how they were fooled. Get a load of this stuff…

Edmonton Murder: The Bearded Muslim Beheader Is Not A Muslim

THE Edmonton Garden Murder: A look at reporting on the murder of Palmira Silva allegedly by one Nicholas Salvadore.

Reports are replete with news that Mrs Silva was “beheaded”. But other news says she was “almost decapitated” in a frenzied attack.

Sky News suggests Mrs Silva was already dead before she was beheaded:

The Mirror: “‘The bogeyman”: Edmonton machete murderer who beheaded gran alleged to be cage fighter ‘Fat Nick'”

The boygeyman? The alleged killer of 82-year-old Mrs Silva is now a figure of fantasy rather than the Sun’s “Muslim”.

Indeed, the Mirror does not mention the alleged killer’s religion once.

Nicholas Salvadore has been described by locals as “the local bogeyman” whom people would “stay away from”… Aspiring cage fighter Nicholas Salvadore, known to pals as “Fat Nick”, was tonight under armed guard in hospital having psychological tests after being held over the 82-year-old’s gruesome murder.

Thousands of supporters for national unity gather at the Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec, across the Ottawa river from Parliament Hill, Sunday October 29, 1995.

IN 1995, Canada was saved from destruction by the desperation of Canada’s prime minister, Jean Chrétien, and a sudden and passionate mobilisation of the “No” vote. The country voted. And Quebec would not leave Canada.

But it was close. The “No” campaign won, but only by a small margin — 50.6% to 49.4%.

Her Majesty The Queen had been worried, commenting, “It sounds as though the referendum may go the wrong way”. We know she said that because her telephone conversation with a radio DJ pretending to be Chrétien was broadcast to the nation.
