Leveson Inquiry: The Guardian and Daily Mail have different versions of the Steve Whittamore story

THE Mail on Sunday’s editor Peter Wright told the Leveson Inquiry into media standards that reporters from his newspaper continued using convicted private investigator Steve Whittamore after his March 2003 arrest on suspicion of trading illegally obtained information with the press and magazines. Whittamore was investigated as part of an Information Commissioner’s Office investigation into the illegal purchase of confidential information named Operation Motorman.

Lord Justice Leveson said:

“Mr Whittamore had collected together a vast amount of personal data. The documents identify the names of titles, specify journalists at the titles apparently or inferentially making the requests. It identifies the names of people from a wide range of public life and in the public eye, and provides addresses, telephone numbers, mobile telephone numbers and charging details for that information.”

The Mail and MoS continued using Whittamore until September 2004. In 2005, Whittamore was was convicted of illegally accessing data and passing it to journalists.

Now: Daily Mail and Daily Express ‘Now’ front-page Headlines for 2011

NOW Watch is Anorak’s review of how many time the Daily Express and Daily Mail used the words “NOW” in front-page headlines during 2011. Now… is the verbal sigh of the right-minded. Now is the sound of importent outrage as a reader clacks their marmalade-coated tongue, shakes their head and says, “Now what have they only gone and done?” What Now?

Stephen Lawrence: How Paul Dacre’s chance meeting with Neville Lawrence helped justice

IT’S Day 3 of the Daily Mail’s post-verdict reporting on the murder of Stephen Lawrence by David Norris and Gary Dobson. The Mail deserves credit for its fantastic headline which labelled five men “MURDERERS” – including the convicted Dobson and Norris. It was brave and exciting journalism. Mail editor Paul Dacre’s tale of what went on in the newsroom is a great read. The Daily Mail is understandably pleased with itself.

So far the paper has led with:

January 4 front page: “MURDERERS! – 15 years ago, the Mail took the momentous decision to accuse five racist thugs of murder, Yesterday, as Stephen Lawrence finally got justice, we were proved right about two of them. Now what about the other three…”

The story runs for 21 pages.

Jan 5 front page: “NO PLACE TO HIDE – Judge jails two of Stephen’s ‘evil’ killers then tells police to hunt down thre ‘three or four’ others still at large’.

“EXCLUSIVE: Doreen Lawrence opens her heart and cherished family photos album”

7 pages.

Jan 6 front page: “EXCLUSIVE: How Stephen’s murder destroyed my marriage”

Over three pages, Stephen Lawrence’s father, Neville Lawrence, shows more photos of his son and tells his own life story.

Aidan Burley joins the Daily Mail’s Nazi party

GOOD to see that the Daily Mail had learnt from its past mistakes, exposing Tory MP Aidan Burley for being at Stag do in France where the looming groom was dressed up as a Nazi and the toff-faced “louts” chanted “Hitler, Hitler, Hitler” and similar things. The Mail realises that such things are wrong. It slammed Prince Harry’s “crashing insensitivity” wearing a Nazi armband to a fancy dress party.

The Mail has eschewed Nazi japes ever since it cheered on the Black Shirts with hearty “Hurrah!” in the 1930s and had Lord Rothmere, the paper’s owner, write in 1933: “The minor misdeeds of individual Nazis would be submerged by the immense benefits the new regime is already bestowing on Germany.”

Daily Mail buries Liverpool’s Luis Suarez in hypocrisy

FOR a newspaper like the Daily Mail whose Steve Doughty said racism in football was no big deal, the decision to assassinate Liverpool’s Luis Suarez in print is weird. Suarez has been found guilty of using racist language towards the ears of Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. (See here.) Liverpool and Suarez deny any wrongdoing.

Chris Wheeler adapts the Mail’s failed editorial policy to castigate Suarez:

Considering Luis Suarez had just received a seven-match ban and been branded the ‘Cannibal of Ajax’ when he moved to Anfield in January, Liverpool should perhaps have realised their new £22.8million signing might land himself in hot water sooner or later.

Daily Mail Introduces David Beckham’s New Son – Who’s The Mum?

THE Daily Mail says David Beckham has had a son – and like his sister, he’s called Harper.

Anorak understands better than most that typoos happen, but might this be an error by the Daily Mail news delivery service, which in the thrust to scream FIRST produces two versions for every story? Had David Beckham’s daughter been a boy named Harper, the Mail and its impeccable sources would have been bang on.

A lot of people say that the internet is the future for newspapers. Well, I say to that: bullshit.com.”

Helen Lewis has been picking out the best bits:

* Martin Clarke [editor] shock: “You can only do so much showbiz in a postmodern ironic way before it becomes tedious.”

Why Is The Daily Mail In A Rush To Find Chelsea’s John Terry Guilty Of (Alleged) Racism?

JOHN Terry (Chelsea and England) V The Media and, apparently, QPR’s Anton Ferdinand. How a newspaper story works:

Daily Mail – October 27, 2011:

John Terry will be confronted by evidence from three QPR players who have backed Anton Ferdinand in the FA’s race row inquiry. Sportsmail understands that Clint Hill, Paddy Kenny and Shaun Derry have  provided statements that point to a  serious flaw in Terry’s version of events at Loftus Road on Sunday.

Ferdinand was baffled by the statement the England and Chelsea captain issued on Sunday night, particularly his claim that YouTube footage showed him responding to an accusation from Ferdinand that Terry had just called him ‘a black ****’.

Kenny, Derry and Hill — an active  players’ union representative — question whether any such exchange took place, given that Ferdinand had no knowledge of a racial element to what was said until after the game.

Daily Mail’s Clarifications & Corrections Column Does Nothing To Erase Mail Online Errors

HATS off to the Daily Mail for its new Clarifications & Corrections column at the foot of Page 2. It is all to do with upholding and raising standards in journalism.

The Mail’s editor-in-chief Paul Dacre tells the Leveson inquiry into press standards, “the depressing fact that the newspaper industry is in a sick financial state“.

He laments the state of investigative journalism:

Courts aren’t covered, councils aren’t held to account.” It is a “democratic deficit which itself warrants an inquiry”.

ANOTHER day and with it another chance for the Daily Mail to reports on Amanda Knox, the innocent American who never did take part in a demonic sex orgy and murder Meredith Kercher. Knox is  the innocent American ‘found guilty‘ by the Daily Mail’s technology and Nick Pisa’s quotes.

Of course, Meredith Kercher is the Mail’s Our Meredith, a British woman who was ruined by incompetent Italians (didn’t they free the innocent woman? – ed) and influential Americans who were, er, forced to sell lots of their stuff and go into debt to fight for their daughter.

The Mail’s Nadia Gilani delivers:

Daily Mail Reporter Covers The Neaden Fire Victims: Gets Three Names Wrong

THE Daily Mail is the paper of record. When a fire ripped through a Neasden home in September 2011, Muna Elmufatish, 41, her three daughters Hanin, 14, Basma, 13 Yehya, two, and two sons Amal, nine, Mustafa, five, died, the paper reacted quickly. There was less a need to be accurate than there was to be first.

The Daily Mail Reporter wrote:

This is the first picture of Basma Kua, 13, who died in a house fire along with five other members of her family. Thirty firefighters were called to the semi-detached property in Sonia Gardens, Neasden, north-west London during the early hours of this morning after a blaze took hold of the ground and first floors. The other victims were Basma’s sisters Amal, nine, and Hannin, 14, their younger brothers Yaya, two, and Mustafa, five, and also their mother Mona, 41.
