Crested Black Macaque Monkey Named As News Of The World Editor

WHEN wildlife photographer David Slater left his camera on a trip to North Sulawesi, Indonesia, one of a group of crested black macaque monkeys took this self-portrait. Says David:

“One of them must have accidentally knocked the camera and set it off because the sound caused a bit of a frenzy. At first there was a lot of grimmacing with their teeth because it was probably the first time they had ever seen a reflection. The sound got his attention and he kept pressing it. At first it scared the rest of them away but they soon came back – it was amazing to watch.”

Ghostly Mirage Of Village Appears Over English Channel (Photos)

TO Durdle Dor in Dorset to see the mirage. Did you see it? It was incredible. There in the distance over the waves towards France stood a line of buildings atop a rolling hill. This town had no roots. The place floated on a milky haze of mist and humidity.

Back in March, the news media reported on a mirage in China. A ‘ghost city’ hung above the Xin’an River in Huanshan City. It was eerily clear, a lost world resting on the backs of turtles.

Face Of The Day: The Durdle Dor Mirage

FACE of The Day: A man enjoys the sunshine and hot weather on the South Bank in central London. Yep, it was hot today. Anorak went to Durdle Dor in Dorset. It was glorious. On the horizon we saw a mirage of a lost country floating on a dark whale-backed hill above the mist. It was incredible. (If anyone out there took a photo of the illusion on something better than a camera phone, please send it in.)
