Arsenal balls: Cup Final mascot won’t forget what he never saw in the Mirror
Arsenal Balls now as the Daily Mirror reports on how Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain surprised a young Arsenal supporter with amazing prize. The report tells us:
This young Arsenal fan won’t forget the Gunners’ 4-1 win over West Brom in a hurry. No, not because Theo Walcott scored a hat-trick or because Jack Wilshere scored an absolute worldie, but for another reason. Gunners supporter Malachi will remember the final day of the 2014/15 season because it was the day he learned he would be a mascot in an FA Cup final.
He sure won’t forget that West Brom match in a hurry – if he was there.
Because as Arsenal reports:
The Arsenal forward sought out the Edgware youngster in his seat at Emirates Stadium at half-time of the game against Sunderland. He then invited Malachi pitchside to reveal that he had been randomly selected from more than 34,000 Junior Gunners to be club’s mascot for the FA Cup final against Aston Villa on Saturday.
Sunderland played Arsenal before that unforgettable West Brom match.
Such are the facts in the self-styled “intelligent tabloid”.
Why Survation and the Daily Mirror failed to publish the poll that showed the Conservatives on course for victory
The polls got it wrong. The Conservative Party won the General Election. But one poll you never saw was spot on-ish:
The polling firm Survation admitted that its final poll showed the Conservatives with a lead of 37 percent to 31 percent over the Labor Party – almost the exact final result.
Survation’s Damian Lyon’s explains:
We had flagged that we were conducting this poll to the Daily Mirror as something we might share as an interesting check on our online vs our telephone methodology, but the results seemed so “out of line” with all the polling conducted by ourselves and our peers – what poll commentators would term an “outlier” – that I “chickened out” of publishing the figures – something I’m sure I’ll always regret.
The Daily Mirror – that’s the Labour-supporting newspaper…

Chelsea balls: Peter Cech defies the tabloids as Arsenal look on
Chelsea goalkeeper Peter Cech is heading out of Stamford Bridge. Arsenal are keen to land him; and Cech would be happy to remain in London.
But according to the Daily Mirror, Arsenal should be wary. The paper says that Chech “hopes Mourinho’s Chelsea…rule England football for a decade.”
But is that really what he said? No. What he said was:
“The last title we won was in 2010, so it has been a long time. This one is hopefully the start of a new era, another generation of players. There is only me, Didier and JT who have been here for the last decade. You can say this is a new generation of Chelsea, hopefully we will confirm the title on Sunday and this team will continue on. You can be a great player, but these moments to play difficult games under pressure, being champions, gives you another step, another dimension. You can see in difficult moments this season, this team has a lot of experience to overcome them. That is why we are in the position we are. The new players came in already with experience, winning the title elsewhere, which is important and why everything clicked quite quickly.”
Pretty clear. But to the Mirror’s Mike Waters, this is Cech saysing Cheslea are at “the dawn of another dynasty swathed in triumph”.
Unless he heads to Arsenal and helps them win…
Liverpool balls: Gerrard earns by the second and Skrtel is a master of cool
When Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1, the point scoring had only just begun. The Daily Mirror’s man with an abacus used various esoteric and expert techniques and algorithms to award his scores out of 10 to the game’s players.
The scores for the Liverpool team are worthy of comment. Three Liverpool players – Adam Lallana, Moreno and…Steven Gerrard scored 4 points each. Gerrard scored one point for every 9.5 seconds he was on the pitch. He was, of course, red carded after 38 seconds of playing time. Lallana and Moreno lasted 45 minutes and 66 minutes, respectively.
And that’s not all.
The Mirror praises “Liverpool’s best defender” Martin Skrtel.
He “kept his head while others lost theirs”.
Skrtel has been charged with violent conduct over an alleged stamp on Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea.
It’s almost as if those points aren’t worth the paper tgey’re written on….

‘New’ footballers: Spurs sign a ‘new Paul Pogba’
Paul Pogba Watch: a look at the lazy media obsession with finding the ‘new’ versions of existing top footballers. Today we learn of the new Paul Pogba, which is very off when you consider that the real Paul Pogba – the old one – is 21 years old.
Today the Daily Mirror brigns news of Baubacar Djalo. He’s 18. He plays for Sporting Lisbon’s Under-19 side. Not good enough for the Sporting first team, Bubacar is, nonetheless, good enough for Spurs.
And he is… the “NEW PAUL POGBA”.
Previously in the Mirror (Jan 6 2015), we met another New Pogba:
Twins!
Transfer balls: Arsenal buy Paul Pogba for £80m in a game of tabloid tennis
Transfer Balls: a look at the ridiculous world of newspaper reporting on football transfers. Today the Daily Express has news that Arsenal are going to buy Paul Pogba for £80m.
Bruce Archer writes: “Arsene Wenger is ready to launch an £80m bid for Paul Pogba.”
The story links to the Daily Mirror. We click. And we read Liam Corless, who writes:
Arsenal are ready to smash their transfer record to bring Paul Pogba back to England, according to the Express.
Eh?
It’s a perpetual circle of bullshit.com.
The Express has a scoop that Pogba is ehading to Arsenal for £80m. It says it read it in the Mirror, wherein we lean that Pogba is heading to Arsenal for £80m because they read it in the Express.
We’ve been tracking Transfer Balls for a few season now but this is the most blatant case of Bullshit Tennis we’ve enountered do far.
How BBC kept Match of the Day from ITV’s clutches
FOOTBALL fans who don’t look at the Premier League goals on Twitter or streamed matches over the web, can delight in the news that BBC has retained the rights to show Premier League highlights on Saturday nights.
On the Daily Mirror, Alex Richards reports:
Match of the Day will remain on our screens for three more years after the BBC retained the rights to Premier League highlights in a deal worth £204million. That is a 15 percent rise on the last rights deal – which cost the BBC £179.7million – despite no bid from ITV, who had been expected to provide competition.
Or as the Daily Mirror says: “The corporation saw off ITV with a £204million bid…”
Also, The BBC owns the rights to Match of the Day. It owns the title. No bid required.
Such are the facts…

Transfer Balls: Arsenal wannabe Loic Perrin wants Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpoool, Spurs switch
Transfer Balls: What news on Loic Perrin, the St Etienne player linked in print with a move to Arsenal. He is (at the time of writing) one of the 65 players linked with a moves to Arsenal this January.
The Mirror catches up with Perrin news by telling readers:
Liam Corless has news. Well, the headline above his name does. The story beneath the screamer contains not a single menion of Perrin. The headline is everything. It is utter, utter balls.
One day earlier the Daily Star did have some words from Perrin:
“Arsenal have not contacted St Etienne, so it makes no sense to talk about it anyway. And I haven’t had any news from my side either, which cannot be a good sign. The fact that I have been included in the French national squad has alerted certain clubs. Great.”
Look out for the Mirror hwadline: “Perrin wants Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpoool, Spurs switch” soon*…
* See above.
Liverpool Balls: Blame Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard
How football journalism works, with Robbie Savage, of the Daily Mirror. This week, Savage is tlaking about Liverpool:
Take away Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard from the side who almost won the title, and what did Liverpool have last season? They would not have finished in the top four. Probably seventh or eighth.
Got that? Savage says remove the three best players from the team that finished second in the Premier League and they would have finished lower in the table. Probably.
In his next column, Savage argues that without Bobby Charlton, Bobby Moore and Gordon Banks, England might not have won the 1966 World Cup. Probably.
Madeleine McCann: Searching Barragem da Bravura For Signs Of A Story
Madeleine McCann: Anorak’s look at the missing child in the news. Today the Mirror leads with a Madeleine McCann ‘BOMBSHELL’:
The “MADDIE COPS IGNORED LAKE TIP-OFF”.
David Collins notes:
A letter handed in to Portuguese police claimed to know the final resting place of Madeleine McCann, it has emerged.
Well, there have been many tip-offs. But they’ve all come to nothing.
An employee of the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz found the letter in the doorway of apartment 5A, where Madeleine vanished, on the first anniversary of her disappearance. The handyman, who we are not naming but was formerly employed by the holiday resort, immediately handed in the note to the police in May 2008.
What did t ysay?
The note was heade: “Madeleine Beth McCann”. It contained “a description below of how she had been dumped in the Barragem da Bravura reservoir, nine miles from the holiday resort.”
He says:
“It was raining that night so it was soaking wet when I found it. It clearly said Madeleine’s name at the top. It was written in Portuguese. Beneath it was a location for what it claimed was her final resting place.I spoke to the other staff about it and they said to hand it in to the Portuguese police. I gave it to them, but I have no idea what they did about it. It would be the perfect place to hide a body.”

Emily Thornberry And Labour Hate ‘White Man’s Gulch’
Poor old Emily Thornberry. She’s the Labour MP who mocked Dan Ware’s home in Rochester. Dan lives in home that displays flags supporting his country and West Ham United FC. He drives a white van. Intrepid Emily, who had journeyed from Islington to a neat road in Kent where working people live, thought it a hoot to show this cultural oddity to her Twitter followers.
We say poor Emily becuase having resigned her job in the shadow cabinet, Emily could argue she was only giving Labour suppoters what they wanted.
Mocking the white working class is ok, you see. Sure, the Daily Mirror today asks:
What does shadow Labour minister Emily Thornberry mean by this photo?
The Mirror quotes other Labour MPs, keen to show that not all the Party’s MPs are possess the Victorian colonial spirit:
Labour MP Simon Danczuk saying: “We all know what she was trying to imply. I’ve talked about this previously. It’s like the Labour party has been hijacked by the North London liberal elite and it’s comments like that which reinforce that view.”
Labour colleague Chris Bryant said: “The Labour Party was founded on the basis that everybody should be treated equally and that’s why Emily herself has said it’s a bit of an own goal.”
But Anorak readers will recall that its not just the London Labour elite who think white van man is a national embarrassment.
Mirror columnsit Brian Reade, a Liverpudlian, once journeyed to south-east London. In light of the murder of black teeanger Stephen Lawrence by a gang of white racists, Eltham was in the news. What he wrote was truly appalling:
Welcome to the Brook Estate in Eltham, south east London. The breeding ground of four of the five men accused of stabbing Stephen Lawrence to death as he waited for a bus a short walk away on the eve of St George’s Day six years ago.
Five products of a twisted philosophy drummed into them from birth. “If they’re black, stab ‘em in the back.”…
A way of life passed down from father to son. You see the link emerge in the fading white graffiti sprayed 30 years ago on the walls of the old railway bridges around the estate, written by the last generation of Eltham Boyz. In three feet high letters: “SKINHEADS.”…
Give me the father and I’ll give you the son who will give you the son who will abuse, persecute and even kill another human being for committing the heinous crime of not being born white.
Racism was inherited. Get the killers and purge the land.
This is White Man’s Gulch… This is E-reg Escort-land.
So much for anti-discrimination, eh. When did the entire white working class become pariahs?
GK Chesterton put it well:
“We are always ready to make a saint or prophet of the educated man who goes into cottages to give a little kindly advice to the uneducated,’ he wrote. But the real saints and prophets – those of the middle ages – were uneducated men ‘who walked into grand houses to give a little kindly advice to the educated.’ The wisdom of the poor was once deployed to moralise the rich; now that of the rich is used to demoralise the poor.”
Kicking the white working class is acceptable. What began with targeting football fans with new forms of control now extends to what car you drive and your home decor.
Emily Thornberry is not a rarity. She’s typical.

Arsenal Balls: Danny Welbeck’s Goal That Wasn’t And A Clueless Referee
ARSENAL Balls: the Gunners tossed away a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with a spirited Anderlecht in the Champions’ League, and the Daily Mirror reports:
Paul Merson slams ”clueless” Arsene Wenger after Arsenal capitulate against Anderlecht
Well, the first Andrelecht goal was offside, the second was a penalty softer given for a ‘foul’ softer than a baby’s bum but the third was down to weak Arsenal defending and a smart finish.
The refereeing was pretty clueless.

Liverpool Balls: Brendan Rodgers And The Laughable Anfield Transfer Policy
LIVERPOOL Balls: Can Brendan Rodgers be absolved of blame for signings that haven’t been top-notch?
Dave Kidd writes in the Mirror that Liverpool’s trasnfer policy could have been organised by ‘The Muppets Show’. We loved that TV show, but Kidd means it not to be praise.
So Liverpool are rightly proud of their history and yet owner John W Henry and his Fenway Sports Group are less keen to remember what made the club great – strong managers. Brendan Rodgers does not enjoy the same power as his great bootroom forebears, Shankly, Paisley and Fagan, even though his achievement in challenging for last season’s title ought to have earned him the right to autonomy.
