Perks Of Being Old: Shoplift To Beat The Recession

IT’S at times like these when I realise that Britain is not what it was; the NYT reports on ‘Silver-Haired Shoplifters On the Rise In Japan’ and what are we Brits doing to catch up with our Asian counterparts?

Bugger all; we can’t even muster a mini-geriatric crimewave, much less achieve the heights of the island of Hokkaido, where 3 OAPs are arrested for every two teenagers nicked.

Boost Your Carbon Emissons With Green Flex Fuel

BRADFORD Plumer explains how the road to global warming is tarmaced with good intentions:

The story goes like this: Back in 1992, Congress passed a law requiring all federal agencies to buy alternative-fuel vehicles for 75 percent of their light-duty fleet. The catch was that, while the agencies had to buy the cars, they didn’t actually have to use the alternative fuel.

It gets better:

VAT Fraud And A Tax Bomb

IT’S always nice to see the faint glimmerings of comprehension in the old media when it comes to justifying their massive expenditure on business and financial journalists, but I’m disappointed in so many of them missing the blindingly obvious on the 2.5 % VAT reduction.

The Economy Is For Empty Nodding Heads

THE economy is front-page news. But how many of us know what’s going on?

And the bloggers aren’t helping much.

Anorak’s Chenier has provided a few scoops; Guido attempts to shine a blue light on goings on, and EU Ref looks to provide context, although today he leads with the post-Darling headline: “Do We Care?” If the economy counts for anything it counts for the triumph of old media over the new.

Pre-Budget Report: Darling Brings Us In From The Arctic Monkeys

CAN Britons civil servants and public sector workers buy enough HD-ready televisions to bring the country back from the gaping maw of depression?

Gordon Brown says yes, adding:

“With any luck a pre-budget report will provide more work for the key public sector demographic. If it works, we’ll be looking to introduce a pre-pre budget report and push on from there to a concerted pre-pre-pre budget report and, paper willing, a pre-pre-pre-pre budget report.”

When Bankers Run The Internet: Lloyds BT

SAYS DAVID Hendon on bankers and the internet:

These are all internet problems and [internet users] think someone should do something about it.

Although many internet users think the government should keep out of the internet, I suggest to you that most ordinary people who just use the internet like they use the banking system or the trains think that the government should make sure it all works properly for them and that bad things get stopped from happening.

Yeah, really. Says:

54 Million Ways To Out The Lie In The LIBOR

FACT One: The latest banking “screw your customer” policy is insisting small, medium and large business pay a sizeable percentage above the LIBOR rate for commercial loans. That is, not at the usual Bank of England rate plus a couple of percent.

Fact Two: Braver accountants are telling Business Accountant Managers to get stuffed and switching accounts to the banks which have not yet turned that screw.

Meanwhile, back in fat cat country: When news of the Northern Rock debauch broke Anorak asked two questions:

  • Who was responsible and accountable. Answer? Every-one
  • Who would be brought to book and who would press criminal charges? Answer? No-one
