Jimmy Carter Haw Haws Ahmadinejad

iran1JIMMY Carter is Haw-Hawing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad:

“I think this election has bought out a lot of opposition to his policies in Iran, and I’m sure he’ll listen to those opinions and hopefully moderate his position.”

Juan Cole:

1. It is claimed that Ahmadinejad won the city of Tabriz with 57%. His main opponent, Mir Hossein Mousavi, is an Azeri from Azerbaijan province, of which Tabriz is the capital. Mousavi, according to such polls as exist in Iran and widespread anecdotal evidence, did better in cities and is popular in Azerbaijan. Certainly, his rallies there were very well attended. So for an Azeri urban center to go so heavily for Ahmadinejad just makes no sense. In past elections, Azeris voted disproportionately for even minor presidential candidates who hailed from that province.

Ahmadinejad Voted For Mousavi And Iran Twinned With Chicago

ahmadinejads-friendsMAHMOUD Ahmadinejad is President of Iran and all the Irans. The press goes bonkers. It’s a fix, right? Right? Right!

So fair is Ahmadinejad that even he voted For Mousavi.

But do not panic – Iran is to be twinned with Chicago. See, we’re not all that different.

Iran’s ex-Foreign Minister in an interview with The Nation’s Robert Dreyfuss:

A coup d’etat? They’ve already made one! They’ve created a dictatorship, in fact. Do you know that last night the security forces occupied the offices of many newspapers, to make sure that their reporting on the election was favorable? They changed many headlines.

They fixed the election.

The Guards are taking over everything, including many economic institutions. The ministry of the interior is increasing its control in all the provinces.

Indiana Moves To Ban Smoking Lettuce

INDIANA Congressman Steve Buyer says smoking lettuce is just like smoking cigarettes or cigars or broccoli or…

An idiot, right? Iceberg is a gateway drug:

When cut, the stems of lettuce plants ooze a milky juice whose appearance, taste, and smell are said to be similar to opium. Once dried, the substance is called lactucarium, or lettuce opium. Used by the ancient Egyptians, the stuff was listed in the Pharmacopeia of the United States of America as late as 1916. It can still be found in herbals and such, which describe it as a sedative and cough suppressant. Lettuce opium can be found in all lettuce species but is most commonly extracted from wild lettuce, Lactuca virosa.

Elsewhere in Indiana:

Hoosier smokers may notice their cigarettes burning a bit differently next month.

That’s because starting July 1, a new law will require that all cigarettes sold in Indiana be “fire safe.”

Unlike traditional cigarettes, the new fire-safe smokes will burn out more quickly when left unattended and are designed to cut down on the number of smoking-related fires.

“The cigarettes are made from the same blend of tobacco as regular cigarettes,” said Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson. “The only difference to the consumer is they need to puff it more often or relight it.”

Indeed. You need to inhale more, and pull harder, to get your safety fag glowing.

Jess Brewer of Lafayette recently traveled to Kentucky, where the new law was implemented in April 2008. She said her first encounter with the fire-safe smokes was not good.

“Since coming back from Kentucky about a week ago, I’ve been coughing constantly and having chest pains because you have to inhale harder on the new cigarettes,” she said. The new design forces a smoker to inhale to get the flame through two strips of paper incorporated into the cigarette. If left unattended, the cigarette will go out.

“I’m totally against the change,” Brewer said. “What’s the point of making safer cigarettes if they lead to negative health effects?”

Best to stick with the salad…

Mirhossein Mousavi And Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Both Get 60 Per Cent Of Vote

But Ahmadinejad’s representative at a supervisory body, Ali Asghar Zarei, said the incumbent was ahead with about the same level of support, the semi-official Mehr News Agency reported.

Gordon Brown Slashes Military Spending

gordon-brown-punch-drunkGORDON Brown and those rats leaving the sinking ships – and those rats oddly staying on the sinking ship – are behaving like a drunken sailor. Or a pirate.

If only:

Drunken sailors generally spend cash that they’ve already earned themselves, rather than running up debt to be paid by others. If our politicians started spending like drunken sailors, it would in fact represent a dramatic improvement.

Read the case against him here.

Todd Blodgett, a former Reagan White House aide who later worked with several extremist groups, met regularly with von Brunn in the 1990s and early 2000s.

“Von Brunn is obsessed with Jewish people,” Blodgett said. “He had equal contempt for both Jews and blacks, but if he had to pick one group to wipe out, he’d always say it would be Jews.”

Obama And Brown’s Gentry Liberalism

darling-to-repay-service-chargesGentry Liberalism

Here is a highly thought-provoking article in Forbes magazine about the phenomenon it refers to as “gentry liberalism” – a term designed to capture the mindset of the sort of person who has voted for New Labour in the UK and Mr Obama’s Democrats in the US. It is, of course, such a shame that the word liberalism has been bent out of shape to mean something rather different, but the underlying logic of the article is hard to contest.

Of course, Mr Obama has a while yet in power, but if I were one of his campaign managers, I’d look at the massacre of left-of-centre parties in Europe with a certain amount of forboding. He’s not invincible, not at all – Samizdata

The Respect Party Curls Up Its Toes

THE Annual Accounts of the Respect party makes for an interesting read. Fringe political parties – like UKIP, Greens, Veritas, the BNP and Labour – come and go:

Following the split in Respect in 2007 and the contestation of ownership of the party for most of 2008 the party suffered a large loss in both membership and income.

This is reflected in the drop in annual income from £210,093 to £36,237.35 and expenditure from £202,608 to £40,1515.16 between year end 2007 and 2008. This fall in overall turnover reduced the national organisation to a shoestring operation that employed no full or part-time permanent staff in 2008. It also witnessed a fall in membership from 2,472 members in 2007 to just over 500 by end 2008.

Many Respect branches ceased functioning. By the end of 2008 it was possible to identify ten functioning branches with about a dozen smaller groups of Respect supporters that were in a position to create a Respect branch in 2009.

The deficit of £3,913.81 recorded in the 2008 accounts is composed of income still to be received for publications by the national organisation and election expenses still to be recovered by the fundraising activities of local branches involved.

YouTube Kills Ahmadinejad’s Presidency

gays-iranIT won’t be the  Holocaust denial nor the jingoism that kills of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presidency of Iran. It will be the Iranian economy. And a video on YouTube.

In the clip, sent out e-mail and on CDs, Ahmadinejad tells a top cleric, Ayatollah Abdollah Javadi Amoli, that a “light” enveloped him during his address to the U.N. General Assembly and that the crowd stared without blinking during the entire speech.

“A member of the (Iranian) delegation told me, ‘I saw a light that surrounded you,'” Ahmadinejad said. “I sensed it myself too … I felt the atmosphere changed. All leaders in audience didn’t blink for 27, 28 minutes. I’m not exaggerating when I’m saying they didn’t blink. Everybody had been astonished … they had opened their eyes and ears to see what is the message from the Islamic Republic.”

Barack Obama Is A Living God

obama-godELAINE GANLEY and Jenny Barchfield are Associated Press writers watching President Barack Obama descend in mighty white light in the City of Light.

Obama and “wife Michelle and their two daughters touched lives in simple ways” during a private stay in the French capital… The French are confirmed fans of the Obamas… Michelle Obama…gets an A-plus for sartorial glamor, natural poise and sheer intelligence.”

But the common touch the first American couple represents, so antithetical to the traditional pomp and circumstance of French heads of state, sets them apart.

When dining out Saturday night at a no-star bistro, La Fontaine de Mars, the presidential party was served water, Coke and table wine to accompany foie gras, lamb and steak with shallots, and paid for meals “like any client,” said owner Jacques Boudon. “It’s just what they wanted.”

Biased BBC Fails With ‘Lying’ Mandeleson

BRIAN Appleyard says it’s time to ditch the cosy politcal lobby that means the electorate can be lied to by a poltical leader and a BBC hack does nothing about it. Note:  both are paid for by the taxpayer they are cheating:

Mandelson’s appearance on the Andrew Marr show this morning sustained me in my conviction that editors must now get together and agree to withdraw from the lobby system. Marr could not really lay a glove on Mandelson because he could not break the lobby and everyone at Brown’s press conference – Brown, the hacks – knew he was lying when he said he had not tried to get rid of Darling. In fact, he tried to make him go on Thursday night and Friday morning. The lobby, thanks to the years of New Labour spinning and bullying, is now a conspiracy against the electorate. Destroying it would go some way to purifying politics and political coverage. There are now no arguments for its continued survival.

The BBC will regrow its teeth once New Labour is kicked out at the next election and the Tories the Beeb doesn’t support get in…
