Madeleine McCann

Madeleine McCann Category

News digests and reviews of the missing child in the news. Madeleine McCann vanished on Thursday, 3 May 2007 from a rented holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Madeleine, on holiday with her twin siblings and parents Kate and Gerry McCann, became the biggest news story of the past decade. We’ve followed it closely ever since the story broke.

Madeleine McCann: Aktenzeichen XY…Ungelöst And The Christmas Lights

PA-17829018

MADELEINE McCann: Not much news on the missing child. But what there is, is here:

Daily Express, December 1: “Germans give hope of clue in search for Madeleine McCann”

Germans?

Detectives hunting for Madeleine McCann have been given information about two German or Dutch-speaking men seen acting suspiciously before she was kidnapped in Portugal.

The paper tells of “potentially strong leads”, which are much better than potentially weak leads.

The potentially strong leads came after Kate and Gerry McCann made a direct appeal on a German crime show, called Case Files XY…Unsolved, in October.

Good. All information can only help. Plenty of Dutch and German holidaymakers must have been in Portugal at the time.

In German, the show is called Aktenzeichen XY…Ungelöst. The show was trailed thus (translation via Google):

Maddie – the name went once in 2007 around the world. Here is one of the most puzzling crimes of modern times. Madeleine McCann was just three years old when she suddenly disappeared during a vacation. Her fate is unknown to this day. The desperate parents turn today along with Scotland Yard to the XY audience and ask: Who can help in the search for our daughter?

So. Scotland Yard organised the show.

The hope that her little daughter Madeleine but is not alive somewhere. Six years ago, the little night disappeared from a holiday resort in Portugal. To date, she is swallowed by the earth. The tireless parents ask today the XY audience for help. They are accompanied by Scotland Yard, which has re-opened the case and actually came to a new approach. gets the case Madeleine McCann after all these years still a positive spin?

And after that, we get, as ever, to watch the parents:

The bitter emotions of a seventh Christmas without her beloved Madeleine were evident on Kate’s face as she forced herself into the yuletide spirit for the sake of twins, Sean and Amelie. She joined thousands for the annual switching on of the Christmas lights in her home village, of Rothley, Leicestershire, on Thursday evening.

She smiled as children played on a bouncy castle and went on rides, but there were other moments when the pain of not having Madeleine there to share the early Christmas joy was clear to see. With a protective arm around the eight-year-old twins, Kate was cheered by warm words from friends and acquaintances who quietly support her.

ITV, November 29:

Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, has suggested British and Portuguese police should join together as a team, in order to establish exactly what happened to missing Madeleine McCann.

After Portuguese authorities admitted last month there was enough new information to justify reopening the case, after shelving their own inquiry back in 2008, Commissioner Hogan-Howe said:

One thing we’d like to see in the future is a joint investigation team which comes under the European community. It is a possibility legally and we’re working together at a political level, at a police and judicial level, to see how we can construct that…

…So that’s what we’re trying to get; an agreement between the two governments and the two police services.

Such are the facts.

Madeleine McCann: The Sun Cooks The Figures On Kate McCann’s Charity Appeal For Missing People

MADELEINE McCann: A look at the missing child in the news:

IBTimes: “Madeleine McCann Hunt: Witness ‘Disturbed’ by Encounter with Praia da Luz Suspect”

Police officers trying to discover what happened to Madeleine McCann have strengthened a lead thanks to a new report by a British holidaymaker.

OK.

The woman, who does not want to be named, told how she and her daughter were approached by a man near to where Madeleine vanished in the weeks before the little girl’s disappearance in 2007.

Go on.

The woman’s description of the stranger matches that given by two other witnesses in the holiday resort of Praia da Luz.

Madeleine McCann: Euclides Monteiro Goes Down

MADELEINE McCann: What news of the dead black immigrant Euclides Monteiro? The Express says it’s of front-page importance:

“NEW EVIDENCE PUTS SUSPECT AT SCENE OF CRIME”

maddieThe crime?

Phone records show suspect was nearby when Madeleine McCann vanished

Well, yes. All we know for certain is that she vanished. The single thread to the story remains unchanged.

Detectives in Portugal say the data shows that Euclides Monteiro, a convicted thief and heroin user, was close to or at the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz on the night Madeleine was snatched in May 2007.

Smacked-out black man steals child whilst looking for iPod and cash in Portugal? He couldn’t have blended in more had he been wearing a burqa.

Officers are probing whether Monteiro may have taken her out of revenge after being sacked for stealing by the Algarve holiday club.

Was he sacked for stealing? A source says he was accused of stealing and then never turned up for work the next day. Was he sacked, or did he just move on?

The 6ft 2in father-of-two died aged 40 in a tractor accident in 2009. Relatives insist he was innocent and say they will work with police to clear his name.

That he should have to prove his innocence is a failure. But what about that headline placing him at the “scene of crime”?

Records of mobile phone signals obtained by Portuguese police are understood to show that he was in the vicinity of the Ocean Club on the night the three-year-old went missing.

Officers are trying to determine why this might be, as it was a year since he had been sacked and at that time he was living 15 minutes away.

Fetch the ouija board.

Euclides Monteiro

But Monteiro’s sister Paula last night claimed he may have sold the phone before Madeleine disappeared. Speaking from her home in Argozelo, northern Portugal, she said: “He was always swapping or selling his phones around that time. I consider myself lucky not to have been arrested because at the time I lent him a mobile which was still in my name. The phone isn’t proof that he was near Madeleine McCann’s apartment. I know he was not there.”

So. There is it: mobile phone of drug-taking black man who worked at Ocean Club was in Praia da Luz on the night the child vanished. Let’s dig him up and beat him with sticks.

Portuguese police continue to examine Monteiro, who emigrated to Portugal as a child from Cape Verde, off west Africa. They are investigating whether he may have been stealing from guests’ rooms at the Ocean Club to feed a heroin habit. Monteiro was convicted of theft in 1996 and served a jail sentence.

Send the man down (six feet)…

Madeleine McCann: Finally We Get A Black Suspect (And He’s Dead)

MADELEINE McCann: Having rounded up and let the gypsies go (for now) the Daily Mirror tells readers that the latest “suspect” is an African-born black man.

maddie suspect

The headline yells: “Madeleine McCann prime suspect pictured: Heroin addict who worked at hotel club”

The prime suspect” is Portuguese immigrant Euclides Monteiro. David Collins writes:

A key suspect in the abduction of Madeleine McCann was fired from the holiday complex where she vanished after police warned staff: “You can’t trust this man.”

A key suspect? But he was the “prime suspect” just one line earlier? And weren’t gypsy abductors giving us hope?

Daily_Mirror_19_10_2013

Says the Mirror:

Junkie and ex-jailbird Euclides Monteiro was sacked by the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz, Portugal, the year before the blonde three-year-old disappeared on May 3, 2007.

Because her hair colour is of vital importance.

Yesterday, as the first picture of the 6ft 2in ex-waiter emerged, detectives were investigating the possibility that he kidnapped Madeleine after being disturbed as he broke into her family’s apartment.

Menteiro, known as Toni, died aged 40 in a tractor accident four years ago.

He’s dead. He died in 2009. Let’s dig him up and beat him with sticks. And then arrest him:

Daily_Mirror_7_10_2013

But phone records have placed him near the flats at the time she vanished. It is believed he may have been raiding guests’ rooms to feed his heroin habit.

Yeah. Or  maybe he wasn’t.

His picture looks nothing like two e-fit images issued by Scotland Yard – but police stress they are still exploring every line of inquiry.

No sh*t. You remember those e-fits? The Mirror shows us them and declared that the man in the picture was “vital” to solving the case.

Daily_Mirror_14_10_2013

Is there a witness?

Nelson Rodrigues, 32, a barman and waiter at the Ocean Club for two years, worked alongside Monteiro in 2006. He said yesterday: “On the surface he was a nice guy but there was something not right with him. He would turn up to work with bleary eyes, sometimes he didn’t seem like he was all there. And things were going missing about that time – laptops, jewellery, mobile phones, anything that was lying around.”

A suspected thief in life becomes a child kidnapper in death.

Mr Rodrigues said police were called after Monteiro was accused of stealing tips. He was searched, but nothing was found and he protested his innocence.

Later an officer for Portugal’s national guard took the staff to one side and warned them about Monteiro. Mr Rodrigues recalled: “The officer told us, ‘We know him, you can’t trust that man’. They said he’d been in trouble in the past for drug offences. “That’s the last time he worked at the Ocean Club. I never saw him again.”

Until now…

What other evidence?

He was living in Lagos, a 15-minute drive from Praia da Luz, when Madeleine disappeared. British expat, George Burke, from Liverpool, reported a possible sighting in Lagos.

He said he saw a girl “remarkably like Madeleine” being dragged along a road to Lagos marina at 6am the day after she went missing.

But Monteiro’s relatives claim police are just looking for a “scapegoat”.

His sister Paula said: “It’s ridiculous – the e-fit they released is a white man and my brother was black. He loved kids. He had a son and daughter and would never have harmed a young girl.”

Such are the facts…

Maria Is A Roma: How The Media Stoked Fears Of Gypsy Abductors Nicking Blond Children

maria racism

MARIA, the gypsy girl found living on a Greek Roma camp, was not abducted. Sasha Ruseva, 38, and Atlan Rusev, 37, are her parents. Sasha is a Roma gypsy. The police have arrested her and Atlan, just as they arrested her adopted parents Hristos Salis, 39, and Eleftheria Dimopoulou, 40. Sasha and Atlan were pinched in the Bulgarian town of Nikolaevo.

Ms Ruseva says she fell pregnant in Greece. She had no money:

“I intended to go back and take my child home, but meanwhile I gave birth to two more kids so I was not able to go back.”

See her other children beklow.

A four-year-old girl, found living with a Roma couple in central Greece, is seen in a handout photo distributed by the Greek police and obtained by Reuters October 18, 2013. Greek police are investigating the identity of the girl on suspicion that the child may have been abducted from her parents. The girl was found on Wednesday at a Roma settlement near Farsala in central Greece during a police sweep of the settlement for suspected drug trafficking. So. The gypsies never did steal Maria, the blonde whose face was flashed around the world. The gypsies never did steal that child in Dublin, either. And there is not a shred of evidence that gypsies kidnapped Ben Needham or Madeleine McCann.

Time, then, to have a look at what the British Press said about blonde Maria:

October 20:

Daily Mail:

Revealed: The rundown home where the four-year-old ‘Greek Maddie’ lived with her gypsy ‘abductors’

Daily Star: Maria was Our Maddie:

Daily_Star_Weekend_19_10_2013 (1)

Daily Mirror:

His mother Kerry Needham, 41, said: “The authorities in Greece always told us, ‘Gipsies don’t steal babies’. Now we know they do. We are very optimistic this new information may help us find Ben.”

The Times told its readers:

The possibility of Gypsy involvement has been investigated in the abduction of two blonde-haired British children — Madeleine McCann in Portugal and Ben Needham in Greece.

October 21

Maria was seen dancing in a video. She was like a dancing bear, they said. She was the blonde angel, they said. The caring Mirror topped the chilling video with an advert for Gummy Bears:

Screen-shot-2013-10-21-at-20.15.56

Ian Murphy told Sun readers:

THE little girl rescued from a gypsy camp dances for her captors in this disturbing video handed to cops.

Lest you think the video of a blonde kid dancing was very ordinary, Murphy told us that what we were seeing was awful:

In the 29-second clip she twirls in circles in the middle of a sunny yard as a dark-haired woman watches. When the tot falters and stops the woman pushes her back into the centre of the screen and she starts again.

Those dark-haired demons. Never did trust them. Stick with Aryans, we say.

The Daily Mail had inverted commas:

First pictures of gypsy couple ‘who snatched Maria’ as they appear in court accused of abduction and facing up to 20 years in prison

Maria had “secrets“:

Daily_Mail_21_10_2013

October 22

The Sun had more on that rescue:

THE mystery blonde girl rescued from a gypsy camp sits with the couple who posed as her parents for years.

Adding:

Fair-haired Madeleine, then nearly four, went missing from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007. Paedophile Raymond Helwett — who lived in the area at the time but died in 2010 — insisted she had been “stolen to order” by gypsies.

Blond Ben vanished on the Greek island of Kos in 1991, aged just 21 months. Five years later a local convict claimed he saw a child matching his description in the Farsala camp where Maria was found — and said gypsies told him the boy came from Kos.

That would be Helwett who never did confess to anything.

The Express then spotted Our Maddie with the gypsies:

express-1-329x437-1

Should they now give up hope?

Hell, no. The Star said there were 10 More Maddies:

Then the Express spotted Maddie:

eex23p001-1ST

The Mirror went further. It talked of an “ABDUCTION PANIC”.

daily-mirror-221013-1-329x437 (1)

The Sun had news on Maria:

Is this Maria? Missing US toddler link to ‘blonde angel’

Ws asked: These not-all-that-wealthy people nick your kids and then at no expense spared ship them to camps in Europe.

And know we know.

Still, no harm done. It was only the gypsies who got accused of running a global child-stealing racket – and no-one likes them, anyhow…

Let’s Get The Gypsies: The Big Fat Darkies Are Stealing Blonde Children In America, Greece, Ireland And Your Town

PA-17960746

ANY gypsy woman who has cheated on her husband with a blonde man had best watch out. And blonde gypsies should just run. The powers that be are eyeing non-Aryans with a suspicious eye. The Mirror and Express lead with news of another blonde child seized from a Roma gypsy camp, this one in Dublin, Ireland.

The child has blonde hair and blue eyes. This not that she not only makes the front pages but has been removed from her darker haired and skinned ‘parents’. This echoes the news of Maria, the blonde removed by Greek police from gypsies.

This Irish child will have DNA tests to establish her identity and links to her family.  No arrests have been made. But the child is in the care of the Irish state. What could go wrong?

The Times adds:

The couple she was living with told police their “daughter” was born at Dublin’s Coombe Women & Infants University Hospital in April 2006, the Sunday World newspaper reported. However, the hospital had no record of the birth and the name and date of birth given by the parents is different to records with the register office.

A birth certificate was deemed to be inconclusive and a passport bore a picture of a baby and could not be matched to the seven-year-old. A consultant at another hospital told detectives it would be unusual for Roma parents to have a blonde-haired child.

Still Looking For Ben Needham – He’s No Maddie McCann

WHERE is Ben Needham? Ben vanished on Kos when he was 21 months old. That was 1991.

The Daily Star reports:

Kerry has spent 13 years looking for her child with no help. Meanwhile millions have been spent probing Madeleine McCann’s abduction from the family’s Portuguese holiday apartment in May 2007.

Why must these two events be elated? Good that the British police think finding out what happened to Madeleine McCann worth the effort.  And Kerry Needham has had help. The tragedy is that we are no closer to knowing what happened to her son.

Madeleine McCann: what Martin and Mary Smith saw and the cynical Sun brands Our Maddie

mccann

MADELEINE McCann: Last night BBC’s Crimewatch staged a reconstruction of the night the innocent child vanished. It was odd. The reconstruction was very thin. We saw a happy family. Happy friends. And then an empty bed.The media reacts:

Sky News: “Kate McCann may have been just moments away from catching Madeleine’s abductor, according to new details released by officers.”

Is a thing that “may” have happened worthy of being Sky’s lead news story? Yes. Because for six years Our Maddie has been entertaining the armchair detectives. Sky wants you to watch its show:

Sky News will show a special investigation tonight at 8.30pm on Sky Channel 501, Virgin Media 602 and Freeview 82

It needs a fact, a hook to seduce the viewers by:

Ian Woods writes:

A man thought to be a key suspect in the abduction of three-year-old Madeleine McCann has been identified – and ruled out of the inquiry. For six years, detectives believed that a sighting of a man carrying a child close to her apartment was one of their best leads. But a review of the evidence has concluded that it was an innocent British holidaymaker carrying his daughter home from a creche.

And it was was a good one. The man Jane Tanner saw was not an abductor.

Police said they were “very pleased” with a response that has seen nearly 500 people contacted them with fresh information since last night’s show. Madeleine’s parents Gerry and Kate McCann appeared live in the studio and said they were “feeling hopeful and optimistic”.

“These cases can get solved and that’s what the public need to think about tonight,” said Mr McCann. “We don’t know what’s happened to Madeleine, we don’t know who’s taken her. The best chance of finding her is by identifying (the person who took her).”

But we don’t know she was taken. All this time and we still do not know what or if any crime befell her. It’s just probable or less probable.

Mrs McCann said: “It doesn’t matter how much heartache we put ourselves through as long as we get the result that we need.” She appealed to viewers to have “the courage and confidence to come forward”, adding they could hold the key to “unlock” the case.

And then this:

And police have refocused their attention on a second witness statement which had been considered of less importance. An Irish family on holiday in Praia da Luz had told investigators that they saw a man carrying a child at around 10pm.

But is it relevant?

DCI Redwood said:

“If this is you, and you are nothing to do with Madeleine’s disappearance, then we really need to speak to you. It’s so important for us to eliminate innocent sightings. But equally if anybody is looking at those e-fits and recognises the person, for whatever reason, then please have the courage to call in and tell us.”

But what about that headline that Kate McCann nearly caught the crook?

The Express also leads with this fact:

eex15p001-1ST

Moments has become minutes.

The potential prime suspect is described as white, in his 30s, of medium build and height, clean shaven with short brown hair. He was carrying a child aged three or four who had blonde hair and was wearing pyjamas similar to Madeleine’s.

Any more facts?

He was heading for the beach but detectives say suggestions that Madeleine may have been taken from Praia da Luz by boat are speculation.

Indeed. Get a load of that headline.

Can anyone get a new scoop? Over to the Sun, we go:L

Two name suspect – Dramatic twists in hunt for missing Maddie

TWO Crimewatch viewers last night sensationally named the SAME man from two police e-fits of the prime suspect in the hunt for Madeleine.

And..? Nothing. B ut better than this is the enws that teh Sun has now adopted Our Maddie as its own. As is ever the way the paper slaps its logo on the missing and dead. How utterly revolting:

Screen shot 2013-10-15 at 07.23.48

But what about the Irish Family who might have spotted something of interest?

The Irish Times: “Drogheda family’s evidence key to new Madeleine McCann appeal”

Drogheda couple Martin and Mary Smith were holidaying on the Algarve at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance with their daughter Aoife, son Peter and other family members. The man police now want to contact was spotted by the Smiths at about 10pm walking down the hill from the Ocean Club complex towards either the beach or the town centre, carrying a blond child aged about three or four, who was most probably wearing pyjamas.

The Smith family gave a statement to police soon after their holiday. The efits were compiled by private detectives in September 2008. However, Det Chief Insp Redwood said that for years the sighting was seen as “wrong place, wrong time” and thus unimportant.

Adding:

Officers do not consider the McCanns as suspects.

The Indy:

Martin Smith and his family left Portugal the day after the disappearance and only later realised the significance of the man walking towards the ocean with the young girl wearing pyjamas in his arms.

In 2009, the Belfast Telegraph noted:

Mr Smith, from Drogheda , was also on holiday in Praia da Luz at the time.

At about 9.50pm on May 3 he and his family were walking up a road less than half a mile from the McCanns’ apartment when he saw a man carrying a blonde girl of about four.

Mr Smith said in his police statement: “I thought they were father and daughter so I wasn’t so suspicious… The man didn’t look like a tourist. I can’t explain why — it was probably from his clothes.”

Such are the facts…

Madeleine McCann: we know only know one thing for sure – an innocent child vanished

Gerry McCann, with his wife Kate, gives a statement to the press in the Algarve village of Praia Da Luz, where their daughter, three-year-old Madeleine McCann, went missing on Thursday evening.

MADELEINE McCann: the news of the missing child is high on the cycle. One thing has changed which she went missing in 2007. Social media means people can talk more freely than they can in the UK. But Twitter would not make pleasant reading for the child’s parents, Gerry and Kate McCann. The armchair detectives are having a field day. What was once “every parents worst nightmare” has become everyone’s game of Cluedo.

One thing unchanged is that the story has a single fact: the innocent child vanished.

Fleet Street Fox gets it:

Six years ago a little girl disappeared. And that’s it – that’s pretty much all we know for sure.
