Obama Rules The Warmed World As The End Day Approaches

TIM Flannery writes on Perth, the dying city:

Speaking last night at the State Government’s Sydney Futures forum, Dr Flannery warned of a city grappling with up to 60 per cent less water. As temperatures around the world warmed by 2 to 7 per cent, Sydney could glimpse its future by looking at the devastating impact that global warming had already had on Perth… ”I think there is a fair chance Perth will be the 21st century’s first ghost metropolis,” Dr Flannery said.

The ABC reported yesterday:

Record rainfall in Perth has led to the November average being reached just six days into the month; it’s the wettest start to November since 1969.

Of course, it’s not too late. One man can stop the weather. No, not Tony Blair. Well, not only him. But Barack Obama.

Solar Panels Cause Global Warming

SOLAR panels. Blame them for warming the planet:

Alexander Ač has pointed out that a greenhouse gas emitted during the production of solar panels and HDTVs, nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) that is used for cleaning some parts of the gadgets, is about 17,000 times more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Mother Nature Declares War On Depraved Cows

DEATH to the cows. Especially the ones you can’t see. The Swiss are making preparations for cow-free world, as must be.

In Valdez Chico, near Montevideo, Uruguay, 52 cows lay dead, felled by a lightning bolt sent from Mother Nature.

Hurrah!

The Telegraph says the odds of being killed by lightning are slimmer than winning the top prize on Deal Or No Deal but more generous than you being selected by Prince Wozamatabili of Nigeria as a safe haven for $456bn in used bank notes.

Multiply by 52. This is God’s will.

The odds of being struck by lightning are approximately 1 in 576,000 and the chance of actually being killed by lightning is about 1 in 2,320,000.

But some cows will take risks:

2013 And The Climate Crunch Will Squash Us All

IT’S not when the ice will melt and drown us all that triggers any debate, but why we are being made to wait so long for the big flood.

The Indy’s Johann Hari looks into this crystal ball:

We are living through two great meltdowns – the credit crunch, and the climate crunch. The heating of the planet is now happening so fast it’s hard to pluck a single event to fix on, but here’s one. By the summer of 2013, the Arctic will be free of ice. How big an event it [sic] this?

Climate crunch…

Polar Bears Take Manhattan And Britain Drowns

THE WWF says we are going to start swimming earlier than expected. Say the nature wrestlers:

Arctic sea-ice in September 1979 and 2007, showing the biggest reduction since satellite surveillance began.

Or as the Telegraph puts it:

Climate change is happening much faster than the world’s best scientists predicted and will wreak havoc unless action is taken on a global scale, a new report warns.

On the other side of the debate is the news that the Alaskan ice is growing.

Alaskan Glaciers Are Growing

THE glaciers are growing, not melting:

A bitterly cold Alaskan summer has had surprising results. For the first time in the area’s recorded history, area glaciers have begun to expand, rather than shrink.

Alaska is c-c-cold in winter:

It was also the first time since any records began being that the glaciers did not shrink during the summer months.

And records began in the 1770s.

It’s 2030 And The World Looks Like This

IT’S 2030 and the Scotsman exists as a free pamphlet given out at King’s Cross station and churches in the area.

What else of 2030? “It’s…

“…A chilling world where licences are required for having children and questioning global warming is a crime could be ushered in by climate change”.

Why wait. Bring it on.

The scenario is one of five potential responses to climate change described by a panel of 60 experts in the study by Forum for the Future, a sustainable development group.

Not sure if we get a vote on which world we want, but know that the “five possible futures for mankind are”:

Noel Gallagher Supports Global Warming And So Should You

NOEL Gallagher, the Oasis cretive force and stage diver, considers global warming and opines:

“I think global warming is brilliant.”

And we should listen. Over in Canada:

Dozens of prominent Quebec artists, scientists and media personalities joined about 60 environmental and social groups yesterday to launch a vast campaign to pressure Quebec’s Liberal government to cancel plans to refurbish the province’s only nuclear reactor.

Sarah Palin Is Man Made Hot

SARAH Palin on global warming. Says the New York Times editorial:

There were also occasional, disturbing flashes of the old, pre-campaign Sarah Palin. When asked about the causes of global warming, Ms. Palin suggested that man had some role — but she wasn’t saying how much.

Is anyone?

Farewell Cruel World: The Search For The Perfect Iceberg

DEAR Anorak, How do I save the world? Here’s how:

Follow the Cape Farewell expedition to the Arctic, the frontline of climate change, with over 40 artists, scientists and musicians onboard including Jarvis Cocker.

It’s great. Here’s intrepid global warming explorer Francesca Galeazzi on “The search for the perfect iceberg”.

Yesterday for me was a roller-coaster of emotions: determination and failure, hope and fear, anticipation and disappointment.

We could cry but our tears would turn to ice…

One of my projects on board consisted of an artistic response to the melting and retreat of glaciers as result of climate change.

Oh?

My response was to place a park bench on a newly formed iceberg or floating ice-shelf off the fast-moving coast of West Greenland. A bench which, in its fragility and remoteness, becomes a silent witness of the dramatic changes that are occurring in the Arctic. A bench with nobody to sit on.

David Suzuki Runs On Diesel

DAVID SUZIKI is an environmentalist. He looks like a cross between David Ballamy, Rolf Harris and Burt Kwouk.

He’s on tour. He’s on the road:

Winnipeg Sun columnist Tom Brodbeck tells us:

I notice David Suzuki himself didn’t “walk the talk” when he did his 40-city, rock star tour of Canada last year.

Remember that one? The chief frog counter driving all over hell’s half-acres in his own private diesel tour bus?

That’s right. Not a train or a hybrid vehicle as his foundation wants everybody else to travel in.

Bette Verte: Bette Midler Goes Green

GLOBAL warming quote of the day: Bette Midler…

“Over the years, the number of trucks that I have behind me has grown exponentially and I don’t really like that, I don’t like wasting the gas,” she told me on a promotional trip to London.

“Fourteen trucks, that’s a lot of gas. So I decided I’d stay put for a while,” she added.

It gets better…

Surely moving equipment in trucks is unavoidable for a touring show, I ask her?

“I can avoid it,” she says, shaking her head, and going on to provide an impressive list of her green credentials that would put most celebrities to shame.

“I don’t drive much, I have a Smart car, I have a hybrid, I drive a [Toyota] Prius,” she says.

It’s the wind beneath her wings that powers her on…

Polar Bears Can Hear Mother Nature’s Screams

POLAR Bear Watch: Anorak’s look at polar bears in the news…

IN California, scientists are testing the hearing of polar bears “to try to find out whether the noises associated with melting Arctic ice could affect their ability to survive”.

In the wild, polar bears live in one of the quietest places on Earth. For much of the time, the Arctic is a bitterly cold, silent world.

But global warming is changing that. Ice, which is crucial to the bears’ survival, is disappearing and people are moving in.

“We’re expecting industrial activity, shipping, recreation, all of those human activities to increase in the Arctic,” says Dr Ann Bowles, a senior research scientist at Hubbs-Seaworld Research Institute in San Diego.

“We’re going to be bringing noise and activity much closer to these guys. What we’re trying to do is help to protect the bears during this period of transition,” she says.

Mother Nature’s Hot Flush: Global Warming Groups Make Us Hotter

A TEAM of scientists from the University of Toronto team have found that “people feeling excluded said a room was colder than those feeling included”.

Yeah, having no friends keeps you cool. Does Mother Nature have too many friends? Are Friends of The Earth giving Her a hot flush?

The BBC contacts a Dr Lesley Prince, a lecturer in psychology at Birmingham University. He tells us:

“I particularly like the idea that if people are feeling despondent or lonely, you could help them feel better by putting the temperature up.”

Crank your engines. Plug in an extra fridge. And let’s all feel better about ourselves…

Solar Panel Rustlers And Recyling Is Rubbish

THE SOLAR PANEL RUSTLERS are a-comin’:

Solar power, with its promise of emissions-free renewable energy, boasts a growing number of fans. Some of them, it turns out, are thieves. Just ask Glenda Hoffman, whose fury has not abated since 16 solar panels vanished from her roof in this sun-baked town in three separate burglaries in May, sometimes as she slept. She is ready if the criminals turn up again.

“I have a shotgun right next to the bed and a .22 under my pillow,” Ms. Hoffman said.

Knut The Polar Bear On Suicide Watch

POLAR Bear Watch: Anorak’s look at polar bears in the news…

KNUT, the German polar bear the Guardian calls an “activist” for global warming, is alive. But his former keeper is not. Thomas Doerflein has died.

THE INDEPENDENT reports: “Love story: Knut mourns his keeper”. Or as the experts put it:

Berlin Zoo yesterday categorically ruled out suggestions that Knut would experience feelings of loss as a result of his keeper’s passing. “It won’t be a problem for him,” said Klaus Lüdcke, a Berlin zoologist, “Knut has been looked after by a whole team – and for him the most important person is the one who brings the food.”

And Doerflein: “He said that he could wish the bear no better first-birthday present than permanent separation.”

Climate Sceptics Have Their Heads Stuck In The Cool Sand

AS he says: “There’s a news article just published at the Guardian reporting the announcement from the Met Office that ‘climate sceptics have their heads stuck in the sand’.”

Climate sceptics such as Nigel Lawson who argue that global warming has stopped have their “heads in the sand”, according to the UK’s Met Office. A recent dip in global temperatures is down to natural changes in weather systems, a new analysis shows, and does not alter the long-term warming trend. The office says average temperatures have continued their rising trend over the last decade, and that humans are to blame. In a statement published on its website, it says: “Anyone who thinks global warming has stopped has their head in the sand. “The evidence is clear, the long-term trend in global temperatures is rising, and humans are largely responsible for this rise. Global warming does not mean that each year will be warmer than the last.”

So what does it mean, then? That it’s not getting warmer?

Looking To Big Daddy Fidel Castro For Love

ALICE WALKER is looking at Barack Obama and John McCain, and seeking Fidel Castro. No, not dear Che Guevara; he’s easy to find:

This is what I want for our country, more than anything. I want a leader who can love us.. But when the lights are out and I’m left with just the stars in a super-dark sky, and I feel the new intense chill that seems to be the underbreath of even the hottest day, when I know that global warming may send our planet into a deep freeze even before my remaining years run out, then I think about what it is that truly matters to me. Not just as a human, but as an American.

She wants Fidel to keep her cool at night. As Norm says:
