Hair It Is: Scientists Return David Cameron’s Bike
WHAT did David Cameron says when his bike was stolen?
The Times says he “had his bike pinched while he popped into his local Tesco supermarket in north Kensington to ‘buy some salad’”.
Anorak was certain Cameron said he had popped out for some “salmon”. On such things common touches are established and lost.
But there was one fact: Cameron’s bike has gone. He left his bike outside, and when he returned, there it was, gone.
But the bike is now returned. And it’s all thanks to the Sunday Mirror and its contacts on the street.

Portugal’s top cop has vowed to search “to the ends of the Earth” for Maddie McCann even though prosecutors have shelved the case. Almeida Rodrigues, head of the Judicial Police, said his detectives will chase up all leads until the 15-month mystery is solved.
No end in sight.
He said: “A case only stops being investigated if there is a successful criminal trial.”

BARACK Obama has been in Germany. He is pictured in most paper with one arm raised in the air. The papers all sense echoes of J. F. Kennedy.
But Anorak senses something else, a mixture of the messiah and a charismatic leader from Germany’s past.
“I thought he was very good,” said Julian Metz, a 27-year-old architecture student in Berlin who shook Obama’s hand after the speech. “It was a great feeling to touch him’ – Bloomberg
The Times calls him a “political messiah”. Enthusiasts “dangled from lamp posts first erected by Nazi town planner Albert Speer”.
There were “hints of a future steeliness”.
Says Benedict Nightingale: “There can’t be a politician who looks and acts more clean-living… He does not wave his hands about very much. And when he does it is not an empty gesture but serves to underline a point.”
“Thousands fall under senator’s spell,” says the Telegraph’s Andrew Gimson.

US Papers In A Panic
NEWSPAPERS are in a panic. The Mirror’s new site is a celeb-fest news dump:
The many and deepening cuts at newspapers across the country are starting to take a toll on their content, according to a study being released Monday.
The challenge newspapers must meet immediately is to find more revenue on the Internet, according to the Project for Excellence in Journalism’s study, called “The Changing Newsroom: What is Being Gained and What is Being Lost in America’s Daily Newspapers.”
Newspaper managers need to “find a way to monetize the rapid growth of Web readership before newsroom staff cuts so weaken newspapers that their competitive advantage disappears.”

WRITES the Guardian on Brian Walden and the Sunday Programme, with bowed head:
Today marks the final edition of ITV’s early-morning political show the Sunday Programme, hosted by Steve Richards. That leaves the broadcaster with no political output at all, after bosses decided not to recommission the Sunday Edition – fronted by The Observer’s Andrew Rawnsley – last year. Brian Walden, who famously monstered many a politician on the iconic Weekend World, must be turning in his grave.

Portuguese prosecutors have shelved the investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance. Kate McCann, Gerry McCann and Robert Murat are not longer official suspects.
Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro, Portugal’s Attorney-General, told police to halt the investigation into of Madeleine’s disappearance.
A statement released by his office confirmed that it had decided to “close the file on the investigation concerning the disappearance of the minor Madeleine McCann due to lack of evidence that any crime was committed by the persons placed under formal investigation”.

Today Portugal’s attorney general, Jose Pinto Monteiro, is to make a statement about the Madeleine McCann case. Reports that the inquiry into her disappearance will be shelved.
This means Kate McCann, Gerry McCann and Robert Murat – the three named suspects – might be cleared.
But what crime occurred? Kidnap? Murder? Paedophilia? Neglect? The Portuguese police have never been able to say for sure.
The BBC has its man in Portugal. It’s “live” from Portugal. And we are watching the parents.
DAILY MAIL (front page): “New agony for Kate as Maddie detective cashes in”
Kate and Gerry McCann are expected to be told today that the inquiry into their daughter’s disappearance is being shelved.
But in a heartbreaking blow, a book by the disgraced former head of the investigation will be published on Thursday promising ‘explosive revelations’ about the inquiry.
The memoir by Goncalo Amaral reportedly contains allegations that Madeleine died accidentally in her parents’ care, and that they disposed of her body to cover up the death.
Why would this be agony now when it is a theory already mentioned in newspapers?
Let’s just stick to the facts:
The McCanns, both 40, vehemently deny the claims.
DAILY MIRROR: “Ex-Maddy cop’s book ‘to tell all’”
Former Chief Inspector Goncalo Amaral, 48, was axed from the investigation last October after criticising Kate and Gerry and the UK police.
But the disgraced officer is expected to repeat his controversial claims when the book – Truth About The Lies – hits the shelves on Thursday.
Will the Mirror dare to repeat the claims? The Mirror deals with facts:
Kate and Gerry, both 39, of Rothley, Leics, are today widely expected to be cleared as official suspects in the case, along with Robert Murat, a Brit living in Praia da Luz.

Surgeons To Get OAP Kill Bonus
“SURGEONS to earn ‘patient survival bonuses’,” says the Sunday Telegraph.
Perhaps to help keep the accounts in order, patients should have their stitching designed to say “I survived [insert surgeon’s name here]”?
Says the paper:
NHS surgeons are to be paid bonuses based on the number of lives they save, in radical plans being drawn up by hospitals across Britain.
Anorak wonder if the surgeons will pay a forfeit for a kill, say, losing a tenner for each year a patient is under 50?
The cadaver should be means tested. If a surgeon fails to save a taxpayer, then so much for the worse for them – the medic will have to wear some of the budget deficit. Fail to cure a benefits claimant and find a tenner in your rubber gloves.
The big money is, of course, in treating the old and frail, those high-risk patients bonus-chasing surgeons avoid. Kill a pensioner or someone who needs round-the-clock care or prescription drugs, and get an OBE.
Don’t get old. Don’t get ill.

Oxford Greens Support Local Garages
RETURNING to their vehicles parked in Martson, Oxford, drivers find a note:
“Driving an SUV is an unacceptably selfish act in the face of this global emergency. [Which emergency is unstated, but suspicions fall upon the state of mental health care in the community] Your destructive vehicle and scores of others across Oxford have been disabled as part of a wider struggle to avert a global emergency.”
As the Guardian reports, the world be no logen be raved by a Land Rover Discovery, two Honda CRVs, a Mitsubishi Shogun, a Subaru and a Mitsubishi truck.
To save the planet the owners of said vehicles are advised to call out a tow truck (a large vehicle) and have their cars taken to a place where there wheels can be replaced, most likely by imported tyres.

BRITISH police have met Portugal’s public prosecutor to discuss handing over evidence into the Maddie McCann probe. Local cops are set to close the case on Monday and clear parents Kate and Gerry over their daughter’s disappearance.
Yesterday a Portuguese newspaper claimed British cops tried to stop information – including the results of a DNA test on the McCanns’ hire car – from being made public.

Madeleine McCann: Robert Murat, Newspapers Escape And Libel
MADDIE WATCH – Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
ROBERT Murat has won libel actions against Sky, The Daily Express, The Sunday Express, The Daily Star, The Daily Mail, The Evening Standard, The Metro, The Daily Mirror, The News of the World, The Sun and The Scotsman.
His case against the media was due to be heard tomorrow, but he has reached a settlement out of court.
You can read a round-up of the matter here, an search for “Robert Murat” on Anorak, which has been highlighting the media campaign againt the expat for over a year.
This settlement saves the media fighting a battle they had no chance of winning and legal fees. The cost is about £50,000-a-head, which is something of a bargain.
And how have these papers responded to the news? With an apology?
